The holiday season is a prime moment for movie musicals, and Broadway fans have an extra treat this year. Maria Friedmans beautifully crafted film of Stephen Sondheims Merrily We Roll Along revival is now playing in over a thousand theaters, offering a chance for those who missed its Broadway run at the Hudson Theatre to experience the show without the hefty ticket prices.
This film faithfully presents the stage production, captured over three nights with the original cast, orchestration, and set designs. The audience is subtly present through distant applause and laughter, but never visually intrusive. Unlike many filmed stage productions, Friedmans approach leans into cinematic storytelling, creating an intimate connection with the characters that feels unparalleled, even for longtime fans of this iconic musical.
The revival itself earned four Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival, with Jonathan Groff winning Lead Actor and Daniel Radcliffe winning Featured Actor. Lindsay Mendez also earned a nomination for Featured Actress. The performances in this film are as vibrant and nuanced as they were throughout the shows Broadway run, maintaining the same energy as during the London pre-Broadway performances.
Originally a rare flop in 1981, lasting only 16 performances, Merrily We Roll Along initially shocked audiences and creators accustomed to Sondheims previous successes, like Company. Its reverse chronological storytelling, spanning twenty years in the lives of three friends, initially challenged theatergoers. Over the decades, however, the show has become celebrated, and this film demonstrates why it is now considered a classic.
The story begins in 1978 with Franklin Shepard (Groff), a successful songwriter, hosting a glamorous Hollywood party. His former friend Mary Flynn (Mendez) observes his arrogance, while the narrative gradually rewinds to reveal the origins of their friendship, along with his complex relationships with Charley Kringas (Radcliffe), his wife Beth (Katie Rose Clarke), second wife Gussie Carnegie (Krystal Joy Brown), and producer Joe Josephson (Reg Rogers). The backward timeline transforms what would traditionally be a tale of ambition, love, and disillusionment into a poignant, reflective journey.
Friedmans direction emphasizes close-ups to capture every emotion on the actors faces, enhancing the storytelling beyond what theater alone can provide. Cinematographer Sam Levys multiple camera angles allow viewers to experience the performance from a perspective that feels even more immediate than front-row theater seats.
Meanwhile, filmmaker Richard Linklater is working on a separate real-time film adaptation of the same musical, spanning twenty years with actors Paul Mescal, Beanie Feldstein, and Ben Platt aging naturally as the story progresses, expected for release decades from now. For now, Friedmans adaptation is the definitive cinematic experience of Sondheims work.
The score remains a standout, featuring iconic songs like the energetic title number, Old Friends, Our Time, Not A Day Goes By, and Good Thing Going. The cast delivers exceptional performances, fully capturing the emotional depth and wit of Sondheims music.
Sony Pictures Classics treats the project as a true film rather than a simple stage recording, resulting in an engaging, dynamic experience that showcases why Merrily We Roll Along endures as a beloved musical.
