Five years after its release, Sinners made its debut in theaters, featuring Michael B. Jordan, a regular collaborator of Ryan Coogler, and Chadwick Bosemans co-star from Black Panther. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Coogler shared how the passing of Boseman influenced the creation of Sinners, motivating him to accelerate its production. The film was released just 15 months after it was first announced, a rapid turnaround in the industry. Coogler explained:
"There was a fear of it all being taken away and not getting a chance to open up more to the audience thats been supporting me so much."
In an alternate world, perhaps Chadwick Boseman would have lived to star alongside Jordan in Sinners, where their characters, Smoke and Stack, could have been portrayed as brothers rather than twins. Although the current version of the film has been met with critical acclaim, including a perfect score in CinemaBlends review, its intriguing to imagine how different the movie might have been with Boseman still part of the project. Despite this, Coogler doesnt regret the final result, appreciating the success the film has enjoyed.
After Bosemans tragic death, his legacy continued through his posthumous performance in Ma Raineys Black Bottom, where he won a Golden Globe and received an Academy Award nomination. He also voiced a version of T'Challa in the first season of What If...?. Meanwhile, Sinners has earned seven Golden Globe nominations, and the films fate in these categories will be revealed during the awards ceremony on January 11, airing on CBS and Paramount+.
