Singer Sabrina Carpenter recently spoke out about the negative reactions to the daring content in her seventh album, Mans Best Friend. She attributes much of the criticism to her early fame on Disney, where she was known for her role as Maya Hart in Girl Meets World.
Struggling to Break Free from Childhood Image
In a discussion with Variety, Carpenter expressed that her Disney background makes it difficult for audiences to view her as a mature artist. She said many still see her as a childhood figure, which creates resistance to her current artistic choices. I think it wouldnt matter so much if I werent a childhood figure for some people, but I also cant really help that. Its not my fault that I got a job when I was 12, and you wont let me evolve, she explained.
Perspective on Growing Up and Artistic Expression
Reflecting on her own upbringing, Carpenter mentioned she observed other female performers embracing mature themes without feeling rushed to grow up. She understands the concerns of younger fans, noting that her own childhood feels recent. Carpenter hopes listeners can appreciate the parts of her lyrics they understand now and revisit the rest as they mature. I always thought, When I grow up, then I get to embrace my sexuality more. I dont even know what that means yet! I dont think they do. I wish Id had more open conversations about all of it when I was younger, but people feel too scared to talk about it, she said.
Living Authentically Despite Criticism
Addressing the backlash, Carpenter emphasized her personal boundaries and the importance of authenticity. People think, Oh, shell say and do anything. No. I really do have boundaries with myself youd be surprised! Im just actually living my life, and youre watching. If you dont like it, its not for you. If you do like it, lets play, she shared.
She added that she wants to enjoy life freely, making choices that reflect her true self. I wore the skirts I wanted to wear; I spoke about things in a way that I wont regret, because I was very open. I think thats all that matters, Carpenter concluded.
