Santa Barbara Film Festival Honors Cynthia Erivo from 'Wicked: For Good' with Kirk Douglas Award, Expresses Love for Her Job

I often think of awards like this as a recognition that comes at the end of a career, and I feel like Im far from that point, Cynthia Erivo said Thursday evening, receiving a standing ovation while accepting the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The black-tie gala also supported the festivals educational programs.

Erivo, likely to secure her second consecutive Best Actress Oscar nomination for her portrayal of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in Wicked: For Good, continued, I am grateful for this honor. It celebrates how far Ive come, but also reminds me of the journey ahead. This is a wonderful pause along the way.

The evening, held at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara, placed Erivo at the center table between Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked: For Good, and producer Marc Platt. Festival executive director Roger Durling opened the ceremony by calling her one of the brightest stars of our time, and referenced the awards legendary namesake, noting, Kirk would have shared a laugh and a dry martini with Ms. Erivo.

A highlight of the night was a montage of Erivos decade-long screen career, curated by festivals Mike McGee. Her work spans The Color Purple on Broadway, Widows, Bad Times at the El Royale, Harriet (earning her Oscar nominations for acting and songwriting), Genius: Aretha, Luther: The Fallen Son, Pinocchio, and Poker Face, where she portrayed five characters in one episode, earning another Emmy nomination, alongside her performances in Wicked and Wicked: For Good. Erivo has now been nominated for all major American entertainment awardsEmmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonysand has won each except the Oscar.

Producer Marc Platt praised Erivos dedication to portraying Elphaba with dignity and her ability to deliver both onstage and in subtle, silent moments. He said, Her true strength emerges not only in song but in silencethrough her gestures and gaze, we feel her soul, her emotion, and her essence. This is the heart of great acting.

Director Jon M. Chu added, Cynthia knows what it means to feel unheard and ensures no one around her does either. She is a defiant, brilliant force of natureyet entirely her own. I am simply the witness, capturing her brilliance.

After receiving her award, Erivo reflected, Standing here reminds me there is still so much to explore. This award fuels my curiosity, drives me to uncover the essence of living, to reach both the depths and heights of humanity. It challenges me to keep finding voices that reflect who we are and how we want to live. I love my job.
