Sarah Paulson Reveals Collection of Text Messages From Deceased Friend Diane Keaton

At a star-studded Los Angeles event, Sarah Paulson moved the audience with both laughter and tears as she revealed a collection of text messages sent to her over the years by her late friend Diane Keaton. The heartfelt tribute took place during The Hollywood Reporter's annual Women in Entertainment gala, where Paulson shared the stage with Goldie Hawn, another close friend of Keaton's, to honor the actress who passed away on October 11.

Paulson first met Keaton while working together on the 1999 film The Other Sister. Reflecting on their time on set, she described Keaton, famous for Annie Hall and First Wives Club, as a true class act who stayed late to rehearse lines, despite having her young daughter waiting at home. Paulson humorously recounted Keatons elaborate street clothes, which included multiple tights, a bowler hat, suspenders, crinolines, and a glass of red wine on ice.

The two became close friends after filming wrapped, and Paulson delighted the audience by sharing an array of Keatons quirky and candid messages over the years. Some included playful complaints about full voicemails, affectionate teasing, and reflections on their careers:

  • Moron, what is your address? 6:30, Diane Keaton, actress.
  • Sarah, I hate your phone. It is always full and I can never leave a message.
  • Keep me abreast on developments. Diane, one of your friends.
  • We are so fortunate. Do you love being an actress? I dont.
  • Look, Ive had it with your phone machine. Ive tried calling you so many times, its creepy.

Concluding her moving tribute, Paulson read an email she wished she could send to Keaton today, expressing regret for missed calls and the void left by her friends passing. She spoke of the grief felt by the world the day Keaton died and ended with a heartfelt thank-you for their enduring friendship.

The 2025 Women in Entertainment gala, hosted by Rachel Sennott and presented by Lifetime, also honored Jennifer Lopez with the Equity in Entertainment Award, Gwyneth Paltrow with the Sherry Lansing Award, and featured a keynote from Molly McNearney.
