During The Hollywood Reporters Women in Entertainment gala in Los Angeles on December 3, Sarah Paulson paid a touching tribute to her late friend Diane Keaton, who passed away in October at 79 due to bacterial pneumonia. The actress shared the personal texts and voicemails she had received from Keaton over the years, reflecting on their close bond.
"Being here this morning gave me the chance to revisit her messages," Paulson said. "Everyone I know who ever received something from Diane saved it because her words were unforgettable."
Paulson read several of Keatons witty messages, including one that made the audience laugh: "Sarah, I hate your phone. It is always full, and I can never leave a message. Moron, what is your address? Hurry home, sucker idiot. Diane."
Another message highlighted Keatons caring nature: "Look, I want to know every single thing that's going on with youyour career, your love, your house. When are you in? Love you, little special. Keep me abreast on developments. Diane, one of your friends."
Paulson concluded her tribute with an imagined message to Keaton: "Dear dumb-dumb, I want to tell you I'm sorry that voicemail was always full. I want to tell you how much crummier the world is without you in it. I want to tell you everything that happened in my life in the 54 days since youve been gone. I will miss you forever."
Reflecting on their friendship, Paulson added, "I continue to be a moron, and I know that you would be heartened to know that. But most of all, I just want to say thank you for being my friend."

Candice Bergen called Keaton "a true artist" with unique talent and humility.
Reese Witherspoon recalled Keaton mentoring her during the filming of the 1992 TV movie Wildflower, emphasizing lessons about posture and professionalism that stayed with her. Keanu Reeves remembered working with Keaton on Something's Gotta Give, praising her generosity and professionalism.
Woody Allen wrote about Keatons charm and unforgettable presence, calling the world "drearier" without her. Nancy Meyers reflected on decades of collaboration and friendship, noting Keatons transformative impact on her life and career.
Ellen DeGeneres shared a compilation of Keatons appearances on her show, calling her "an icon" and "one of a kind." Goldie Hawn remembered shared dreams of growing old together, while Carol, who wrote "First Christmas" for Keaton, described her as "a magic light for everyone."
Mandy Moore, who co-starred with Keaton in Because I Said So, called working with her "an honor of a lifetime." Other celebrities, including Steve Martin, Bette Midler, and Elizabeth McGovern, shared memories emphasizing Keatons humor, originality, and lasting influence on film and culture.
Throughout the tributes, the common theme was Keatons exceptional talent, generosity, and singular personality. Friends and colleagues celebrated her legacy, encouraging fans to honor her by watching her films and embracing their own individuality, just as she did.
