At The Hollywood Reporters Women in Entertainment gala in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Dec. 3, Sarah Paulson and Goldie Hawn paid heartfelt tribute to their late friend Diane Keaton. The actress, who passed away on Oct. 11 at 79 from bacterial pneumonia, was remembered with warmth and humor.
Paulson, 50, took the stage alongside Hawn and read aloud a series of candid and witty text messages sent by Keaton over the years. Some messages humorously called Paulson a Moron and a numbskull, revealing the playful side of their friendship.
I want to tell you how much emptier the world feels without you, Paulson said, sharing an email she wished she could now send. The world lost its mind with grief the day you died.
Among the texts she read were straightforward messages such as, Moron, what is your address? and, We are so fortunate. Do you love being an actress? I dont.
Many messages humorously complained about Paulsons full voicemail. One read, As usual, your voicemail is full. What makes you so f------ popular? In another, Keaton referenced Paulsons partner, Holland Taylor, writing, You are impossible to contact. Im going to talk to Holland about you. First of all, you remain unreachable by phone. What the f--- are you doing? One of your very few old friends. Keaton also praised Taylor as full of energy, adding, Shes a force, totally charming, unique. You, on the other hand, you are a numbskull. Its sad, you had so much potential.
Hawn, 80, who starred with Keaton in First Wives Club, spoke emotionally at the event: She just cannot be gone. No one like that should ever die. She brought so much joy, life, and exuberance. She was like lightning in a bottle.
Diane Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke. Her family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support following her passing, stating, The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane.
Reflection on Diane Keaton’s Legacy
The heartfelt tribute to Diane Keaton at The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment gala serves as a poignant reminder of the unique impact she had on those around her. As Sarah Paulson and Goldie Hawn shared memories and personal messages from Keaton, the overwhelming sense of loss was met with moments of laughter and warmth, celebrating the actress's unforgettable character.
Keaton’s passing at the age of 79 has left a void in Hollywood and in the hearts of her close friends. Sarah Paulson’s tribute, reading from a series of candid and humorous texts, painted a picture of a woman who, while often playful and irreverent, was deeply beloved. The messages ranged from witty remarks calling Paulson a “Moron” to heartfelt expressions of fondness, demonstrating the depth of their friendship. These personal glimpses into their relationship shed light on the human side of the iconic actress, whose humor and candidness touched those who knew her well.
Goldie Hawn’s emotional words about Keaton further highlighted the irreplaceable nature of her presence. Hawn, who starred alongside Keaton in *First Wives Club*, described her late friend as a force of nature, someone whose exuberance and energy could not be replicated. The tribute underscored not just Keaton’s professional achievements but her vibrant personality that brought joy to those fortunate enough to work and interact with her.
Despite the sorrow of her passing, the tributes and messages from her friends paint a picture of a woman who lived life fully, with humor, love, and unbridled spirit. The world may have lost Diane Keaton, but her legacy—both as an actress and a friend—remains enduring, immortalized in the memories and stories shared by those who knew and admired her.
