  3. Scarlett Johansson set to join DC Universe in "The Batman Part II" alongside Robert Pattinson

Scarlett Johansson is reportedly in discussions to join the DC Universe for The Batman Part II, directed by Matt Reeves, starring opposite Robert Pattinson. The production is expected to start filming in spring 2026.

Johansson, known for her portrayal of Natasha Romanoff in Marvels Avengers films and as the lead in 2021s Black Widow, has previously stated she will not return to the character following Romanoffs heroic death in Avengers: Endgame (2019). In a 2023 interview, she emphasized, Natasha is dead. She is dead. She's dead. Okay? Fans just don't want to believe it.

After a high-profile legal dispute with Disney regarding Black Widows simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ release, which centered on her box officetied compensation, Johansson resolved the case in September 2021. Despite stepping away from acting as Natasha, she has expressed interest in contributing to the Marvel Cinematic Universe behind the scenes. She noted during the Cannes Film Festival that large-scale action films can still explore deep human connections, family, and emotional themes, similar to her directorial debut, Eleanor the Great.

For The Batman Part II, Johansson is expected to appear on screen. Director Matt Reeves confirmed that the script, co-written with Mattson Tomlin, has been completed. The film will again feature Robert Pattinson as Batman and is scheduled for release on October 1, 2027. Reports indicate that Zo Kravitz, who played Selina Kyle/Catwoman, will likely not return for the sequel.

In addition to her DC project, Johansson will star in the upcoming new installment of The Exorcist, directed by Mike Flanagan. The untitled film, produced by Universal and Blumhouse, is set in New York City and will introduce an original story within the franchise, marking the seventh film in over fifty years.

Author's Opinion: Scarlett Johansson's Shift to DC - A Strategic Move

Scarlett Johansson's potential entry into the DC Universe is a significant shift in her career, and it raises several questions about the future direction of both her acting portfolio and the DC franchise itself. Known for her iconic role as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Johansson's involvement in The Batman Part II signals a major crossover that could draw fans from both superhero universes.

Johansson’s decision to join DC is particularly intriguing considering her firm stance on not returning to Marvel after her character’s death in Avengers: Endgame. Her strong words about Natasha’s death—“She is dead. She’s dead. She’s dead”—suggest a clear division between her Marvel career and future projects. However, her willingness to join the DC Universe points to a strategic career move, perhaps motivated by a desire for creative exploration beyond her past roles.

The news also reveals much about the direction Matt Reeves' vision for The Batman Part II is taking. The film, expected to begin production in spring 2026, has already completed its script. With Robert Pattinson returning as Batman, Johansson's addition to the cast could bring fresh dynamics to the sequel, especially with the possibility of a new, compelling character. However, the absence of Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman is noteworthy, and it will be interesting to see how the story adapts without her.

Johansson’s participation in the new Exorcist film further emphasizes her versatility as an actress, signaling that she is open to taking on a variety of roles, whether in the horror genre or alongside iconic superheroes. Her foray into horror, directed by Mike Flanagan, demonstrates her continued expansion into diverse cinematic territory.

In conclusion, Scarlett Johansson’s entry into the DC Universe marks a new chapter in her career and reflects the evolving landscape of Hollywood’s superhero genre. As the superhero rivalry between Marvel and DC continues, Johansson's move may set the stage for more cross-franchise collaborations in the future.
