While horror films like Scream are often linked to sudden frights, for David Arquette, clowns evoke warmth and nostalgia. He associates them with happiness and the wonder of childhood. In a recent podcast appearance, Arquette spoke openly about his enduring admiration for Bozo the Clown, a passion that has even motivated him to revive the character on television.
David Arquette Discusses Bozo's Impact on His Life
When asked about a hidden obsession, Arquettes answer was unexpected: Bozo the Clown. Bozo embodies the childlike wonder in your heart, he shared. That sparkle in your eyes when you were young, the laughter with your friends thats Bozo. (via David Greene Is Obsessed podcast)
Arquette revealed that this sense of joy stayed with him long after the original Bozo shows ended. He also highlighted the educational purpose behind the character. Bozo was created by Alan Livingston at Capitol Records as part of a read-along record series to help kids learn to read. The records featured Bozo and his friends, and children would follow along in a book, turning pages whenever the whistle blew, he explained. These early recordings eventually led to television pilots and then The Bozo Show, which aired in various local versions for decades.
How Playing Bozo Influenced Arquettes Life
Arquette also credited his role in the Scream films with helping him manage personal struggles and past addictions. Performing as Bozo is like being completely free while staying grounded, he said. You can act silly and carefree, doing things you normally wouldntjumping on tables, shouting, being outrageouswithout worrying about consequences or feeling terrible the next morning.
This playful, liberating energy is one reason Arquette remains so drawn to Bozo, keeping the clowns magic alive in his life and work.
