Paramount+ has officially canceled the NCIS spin-off series "Tony & Ziva" after just one season. Despite fan excitement, the show failed to secure enough viewership for a renewal. The lead actors, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, thanked fans for their support and reflected on their beloved characters' journey.
On December 20, Paramount+ announced the cancellation of the NCIS spin-off series, Tony & Ziva, after only one season. The series, which brought back iconic NCIS characters Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, was meant to continue their story, but fans will not get a second season. The cancellation was confirmed by the show's leads, Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, in a joint statement released on Friday.
The actors expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to bring back these beloved characters, saying, "We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to revisit these beloved characters and continue their story." The statement also conveyed their thanks to everyone involved in the production, including the cast, crew, writers, directors, producers, as well as their partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+ for making the show a reality.
The Tony & Ziva series marked the reunion of former NCIS agents Tony DiNozzo (played by Michael Weatherly) and Ziva David (played by Cote de Pablo) after a 12-year hiatus. The show followed the two characters as they embarked on a global adventure, with their daughter Tali, portrayed by Isla Gie, joining them on their journey. Fans of the characters were eager to see them reunited on screen after their long absence from the franchise.
Cote de Pablo, who reprised her role as Ziva David, recently reflected on her return to the character at New York Comic Con. She explained, "It's rare for actresses to have the chance to reprise a role that is not only loved but also fierce, strong, and resilient after so many life challenges." De Pablo also shared that she found it inspiring how Ziva continually overcame difficult circumstances and fought through adversity. The actress revealed that many women had reached out to her, expressing how much they related to Ziva's journey. This, according to de Pablo, made her even more determined to portray the character in the best way possible.
The series had a lot of anticipation from fans, especially those who had followed the characters for years during their time on NCIS. However, despite the excitement, Paramount+ decided not to renew the show for a second season. The cancellation has come as a disappointment to many fans, who had hoped for further adventures of the iconic duo.
The cancellation of Tony & Ziva comes as part of a broader shift in the television industry, where streaming platforms are increasingly cautious with their investments in new series. While the first season had its share of loyal fans, the series was unable to secure the kind of viewership necessary for Paramount+ to commit to additional episodes. It's unclear if the characters of Tony and Ziva will appear again in any future NCIS-related projects or if the two will remain in the past, leaving their story with the conclusion of the single season.
While the news is disappointing for fans of the show, the legacy of these two iconic characters continues to live on in the NCIS universe. Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David have been part of the NCIS franchise for many years, and their relationship remains one of the most beloved storylines in the show's history. Fans will undoubtedly continue to cherish their journey, both on-screen and in their hearts, even without a second season of Tony & Ziva.
