Selma Blair clarifies that Hamas hostage drama 'Stay Forte' is 'not political'

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 Selma Blair stars as an Israeli hostage from Kfar Aza in the film Stay Forte, which opens Friday in Los Angeles as an awards contender. This role marks one of her first performances since her multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

In a recent Zoom interview, Blair, 53, explained that the films focus on the October 7 attacks in Israel emphasizes human experience rather than politics. The story felt urgent and human, not political. Its a story of suffering and hope that stays with you, she said.

Stay Forte dramatizes characters inspired by Israeli hostages Yotam Haim, Alon Shamriz, and Samer Talaika, who were tragically killed by the Israeli Defense Forces while escaping in December 2023. Blair portrays a woman the men encounter during captivity. Fluent in Hebrew, she expressed gratitude for sharing stories survivors and families entrusted to her.

These are tales of human tragedy and empathy. As an artist, I wanted to honor them without any political agenda, Blair added.

The Human Message of Stay Forte

Director Doron Eran was motivated to make the film after witnessing Americans deny the attacks on television. With the Gaza war two years past and months after a ceasefire, Eran hopes the film encourages coexistence and peace. We need to find ways for Jews and Muslims to live together in Israel, he said.

Eran described Stay Forte as an antiwar story, aiming to inspire reflection among military and government leaders. The film underscores the tragedy of hostages killed by their own allies and the need for accountability.

Blair emphasized that global opinions on Gaza vary but hopes her film reminds audiences of shared humanity. I pray that those unfamiliar with these stories will see their worth and understand the suffering that occurred, she said.

Families of hostages were involved in the production, providing insight into their loved ones experiences. Blairs character draws partly from survivor Amit Soussana, with dialogue reflecting real accounts of captivity and abuse. You always feel a responsibility when portraying such intense experiences, she said.

Returning to Acting After MS

After undergoing stem-cell treatment in 2021 and enjoying two years without relapse, Blair returned to filming independent projects. Stay Forte was shot in underground World War II tunnels in Tbilisi, Georgia, where Blair discovered unexpected stamina. It was calming and restorative, revealing strength I didnt know I had, she said.

Blair now feels prepared for lead roles demanding daily filming and continuous presence. She continues to attend Hollywood events with the support of her dog, Scout, who helps her navigate social settings.

Reflections on a Varied Career

Looking back, Blair appreciates her journey from teen films like Cruel Intentions and Legally Blonde to collaborations with Guillermo del Toro on Hellboy movies and Todd Solondz dramas. She fondly recalls her early work in The Sweetest Thing, praising its bold portrayal of female friendship before the trend became mainstream.

Blair remains grateful for mentorship and support from colleagues, while continuing to embrace new acting opportunities in independent films.
