Just three days ago, Susan Powter was delivering food for Uber Eats. While food delivery itself is not unusual, the surprise lies in the fact that Powter once spearheaded the Stop the Insanity! fitness craze of the 1990s, a phenomenon that earned her business $276 million in its debut year.

It was an unbelievable occurrence, says the 67-year-old Australian-born, U.S.-raised Powter. No one expected it, and then it shattered every record.

Powter initially became a fitness sensation after creating a high-energy exercise and nutrition program to lose weight post-divorce. Her infectious enthusiasm and advocacy for healthy, organic eating made her one of the original fitness influencers, motivating millions to embrace wellness. However, years of financial mismanagement and legal struggles wiped out her fortune, leaving her living in a welfare hotel in Las Vegas by 2018.

Her journey of success, collapse, and resurgence is documented in Stop the Insanity: Finding Susan Powter, executive produced by Jamie Lee Curtis and currently available for streaming. Despite losing her wealth, Powters energy and determination remain undiminished as she works to rebuild her life.

Its been challenging, Powter admits. But I survived. Im surviving. People are often stunned when they watch the documentaryit tells the full story of the empire that was Stop the Insanity.

Powter reflects on what she has learned from starting over in her 60s when employment opportunities are scarce and how being labeled too much shaped her identity. Being too loud and too much has been my life. Even at 10 years old in a convent school, teachers noted, She talks too much. Ironically, that became my career, she says.

Having Jamie Lee Curtis as a supporter has been transformative. She threw me a lifeline, Powter explains. To have someone like Jamie Lee believe in youit validates that mistakes are part of life and encourages you to keep going.

At 67, Powter continues to drive for Uber Eats to sustain herself. She describes the ageism she has encountered in the workforce and the necessity of perseverance: Even now, there are many more noes. Any aging person, especially women, faces narrowing opportunities. But I work to pay my bills and remain independent.

Her iconic short, spiked blond hair has always been a defining feature, though she reveals it was never a marketing strategy. People thought it was deliberate, but its just the only way my hair had volume. Its been a challenge my entire life.

Powter has tattoos that carry personal significance, including a rosary on her hand, symbolizing her upbringing in a Dominican convent. She plans to expand her body art when finances allow, emphasizing self-expression despite hardships.

Her sons, though not featured in the documentary, have supported her through difficult times. As a single mother, she prioritized independence, only accepting help when absolutely necessary, fostering resilience and self-sufficiency.

Reflecting on financial lessons, Powter stresses the importance of preparing for uncertainty. Whatever you have, treat it as something that could disappear. Protect yourself. Life changes quickly, and security is crucial, she advises.

Despite past setbacks, Powter remains inspired by modern fitness influencers who openly share postpartum experiences and promote homegrown food, seeing parallels to her early efforts to encourage healthy living. She celebrates their authenticity and courage in challenging industry norms.

When asked about cosmetic enhancements, Powter says she is focused on practical needs first, such as financial stability and family security. A facelift may come later in life, but only after rebuilding her life fully.

Through determination and resilience, Susan Powter continues to chart a path of reinvention, proving that its never too late to rebuild and redefine oneself.
