Shirley MacLaine, 91, Credits Dancing for Her Longevity in Rare Awards Show Appearance

Shirley MacLaine, the 91-year-old Academy Award-winning actress, made a notable appearance at the inaugural Dance Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Wednesday, December 3, at the Gloria Kaufmann Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles. She was honored with the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award, which will now carry her name: the Shirley MacLaine Lifetime Achievement Award.

During her speech, MacLaine emphasized the lifelong impact of dance on her life. Receiving recognition for dancing is incredibly meaningful to me. My mother enrolled me in dance classes at age three due to weak ankles, and I fell in love with it, she shared. Dance taught me discipline, musicality, teamwork, punctuality, and perseverance. I continued attending classes daily into my sixties. I believe dance has played a key role in keeping me healthy and active.

She further encouraged others to explore dance. If anyone is searching for purpose, I highly recommend ballet. It teaches the essence of movement, discipline, art, resilience, criticism, applause, and the experience of having a body. For everything Ive achieved, dance remains the most significant part of my life, MacLaine added.

This appearance follows a couple of rare public sightings of MacLaine in Malibu, California, where she lives, on November 25 and 29. The star was seen dining with friends and her assistant at Kristy's Village Cafe during the week of Thanksgiving.

MacLaine joined a distinguished group of inaugural Dance Hall of Fame inductees, including Mikhail Baryshnikov, the late Gene Kelly, Misty Copeland, the late Bob Fosse, the late Jerome Robbins, the late Stephen Twitch Boss, the late Alvin Ailey, and Kenny Ortega. Channing Tatum represented Stephen Twitch Boss, while Fosses grandson Noah Fosse and Kellys wife Patricia accepted honors on behalf of their late relatives. Connie Boss Alexander, Stephens mother, and his brother Deondre Rose also participated in the ceremony.

MacLaines most recent on-screen work includes the 2022 film American Dreamer and two episodes of Only Murders in the Building from the same year.
