Shirley MacLaine has shared that dancing has been the key to her long and vibrant life. On Wednesday, December 3, the Terms of Endearment actress, now 91, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dance Hall of Fame in Los Angeles.

"Being recognized for my dancing is the highest honor I could imagine. Truly," MacLaine expressed during her acceptance speech. "My mother enrolled me in dance classes at the age of three because my ankles were weak, and I instantly fell in love with it. Beyond that, dance taught me discipline, a love for music, teamwork, and punctuality. I attended classes every day until my 60s. I believe the lessons I learned from dancing are the reason Im still here today."

The Oscar-winning star began her career on Broadway as a dancer before her instructors encouraged her to explore acting, noting that her movements carried a unique expressiveness, as she explained in a 2024 interview with CBS Sunday Morning. She also showcased her dance talent in films such as What a Way to Go! and Can-Can.

"For anyone wondering how to find purpose in life, I highly recommend taking ballet. Im serious. Dance taught me about the meaning of movement, discipline, art, pain, criticism, applause, and the experience of having a body," she added during the ceremony.

The inaugural class of honorees also includes legendary dancers such as Alvin Ailey, Bob Fosse, Gene Kelly, Stephen Twitch Boss, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Moving forward, this recognition will be known as the Dance Hall of Fame Shirley MacLaine Lifetime Achievement Award.
