Smokey Robinson is taking proactive legal steps in an ongoing civil case. The legendary producer has successfully obtained a court order requiring four of his accusers to submit their mobile devices for review, aiming to preserve crucial evidence that could support his defense.
Robinson faces multiple allegations from former employees, including claims of sexual misconduct. On Friday, the judge ruled that four of these individuals must provide their phones for imaging, responding to Robinson's request to prevent deletion of potentially vital information.
Robinson's attorney stated, We are aware of prior communications between these plaintiffs and our client. Accessing these devices will allow the court, a jury, and the public to see the full context of the situation. According to court filings, the accusers have ten days to comply with the order.
Previously, requests for these devices were ignored, prompting Robinsons legal team to escalate the matter. Christopher Frost, Robinsons lawyer, noted that the accusers had previously failed to respond to discovery demands regarding their phones.
The civil suit recently expanded when an additional male accuser came forward, alleging sexual harassment during his employment as a housekeeper at Robinsons residence about ten years ago. The accuser claimed Robinson made inappropriate advances while partially clothed, which led to the termination of his employment despite later being reinstated by Robinsons wife.
Robinsons legal team has dismissed these claims as false and designed to damage his reputation. Frost described the accusers as hiding behind anonymity to gain publicity and financial settlements, while also refusing to cooperate by withholding evidence relevant to the investigation.
The new accuser described emotional trauma and distress resulting from his alleged encounters with Robinson, highlighting a serious impact on his well-being.
Robinson has countered the lawsuit by requesting a $500 million settlement and presenting evidence of a supportive relationship with his former employees. The defense emphasizes gestures of kindness, including gifts, assistance with medical expenses, and invitations to family events. One former staff member reportedly went on vacation with Robinsons wife, Frances Gladney, for a birthday celebration.
Some accusers have also implicated Gladney, claiming she facilitated a permissive environment for Robinsons alleged behavior. Allegations include enabling misconduct and creating a hostile workplace through verbal abuse and derogatory language. However, Gladney has not publicly addressed these claims.
The case continues, with Robinson seeking potentially revealing evidence from the seized phones to strengthen his defense.
