Sportswriter Jeff Pearlman Criticizes Stephen A. Smith for Attacking Mark Kelly Over ‘Illegal Orders’ Speech: ‘Just an Absolute Moron’

Sports journalist Jeff Pearlman strongly criticized Stephen A. Smith following his harsh reaction to Senator Mark Kelly's (D-AZ) comments urging military personnel to "refuse illegal orders" allegedly from former President Donald Trump.

Last week, Smith, who has no military experience, condemned Kelly's statement, insisting he personally knows better than the former Navy captain and astronaut. During his broadcast, Smith exclaimed, "How dare you?" in response to Kellys appeal.

In a recent TikTok video, Pearlman called Smith an "absolute moron" and criticized his political commentary overall. Pearlman said:

"First of all, Stephen A. Smith is a moron, just an absolute moron. It is crazy that he now has a voice in politics. His opinions are lazy, uninformed, uneducated. He doesnt do research. He treats it the same way he talks about NFL kickers. Its just nonsense, a way for him to get paid."

Pearlman emphasized the widespread connection Americans have to the military, noting his own familys service. He argued that people without military experience should avoid commenting on such matters:

"Probably 85% of Americans have some relative who served in the military. My dad was in the National Guard. My uncle John was in the army. If you didnt serve, you dont actually knowso stop speaking on it."

Pearlman also criticized Smiths alliance with Sean Hannity, saying it gives certain groups comfort in their biases, and mentioned that fellow commentator Jason Whitlock engages in similar behavior. He continued:

"The worst part is Stephen A. Smith is just uninformed. The next time he offers a political opinion that is truly insightful and researched will be the first time. Everything is about attention. He tries to appeal to conservative whites while also appearing credible to liberal audiences. Its an act. Its nonsense."

Pearlman condemned Smith for attacking Kelly, a real veteran, and accused him of exploiting politics for personal gain:

"Bashing people like Mark Kelly, actual veterans who served, is ridiculous. You need to stop because you dont know what youre talking about. Its all for attention and money, which is dangerous in times like these."

Pearlman has previously called out Smith, including in April 2024, when he criticized Smiths claim that Trump resonates with Black Americans because of his legal challenges.
