On Thursday, Stephen Colbert, host of the Late Show, poked fun at Pete Hegseth following a Pentagon watchdog report that warned the defense secretarys use of the Signal messaging app could have exposed sensitive Department of Defense information, potentially putting personnel at risk.
Colbert highlighted Hegseths sharing of highly confidential military plans through the app, including messages sent to Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. The Pentagon acting inspector generals report suggested that such actions might have jeopardized U.S. mission objectives and endangered pilots.
Surprising, Colbert joked, he usually uses an ax to put American troops in danger, referencing a past incident where Hegseth threw an ax on live television, striking a member of the West Point Hellcats marching band, who later filed a lawsuit against him. The audience responded with a collective groan.
Colbert also questioned how long Hegseth would remain in his current role. Dont worry, Colbert added, he already has a backup planhell be wingman for that intoxicated raccoon, alluding to reports of Hegseths heavy drinking habits.
Fans can catch more of Colberts commentary on Thursdays episode of the Late Show.
Analysis: Pentagon Signal Messaging Concerns
The recent Pentagon acting inspector general report raises serious questions about operational security. Pete Hegseth's use of the Signal messaging app to share highly sensitive military information, including communications with Jeffrey Goldberg of The Atlantic, could have compromised mission objectives and endangered personnel.
While Stephen Colbert highlighted these issues with satire on the Late Show, the underlying risk is substantial. Sharing classified details on unsecured platforms exposes U.S. operations and personnel to potential threats.
It remains unclear how long Hegseth will continue in his role, given the potential breaches and prior incidents that have drawn public scrutiny. The situation underscores the importance of strict compliance with secure communication protocols in defense settings.
