[Warning: This article contains significant spoilers for Stranger Things, Season 5, Volume 1.]
As Netflix continues to roll out Stranger Things Season 5, one storyline stands out: Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) is still grappling with the death of Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) from Season 4. The latest season opens with Dustin keeping Eddies Hellfire Club alive at Hawkins High, even as popular students push him to shut down the Dungeons & Dragons group.
In honoring Eddies memory, Dustin undergoes a striking makeover, adopting elements of Eddies rocker style into his own appearance. Hair designer Sarah Hindsgaul explained, The first step was crafting a hairstyle that nodded to Eddie but retained Dustins natural curls. Its a true tribute, while still feeling like Dustin.
The look, achieved with hair extensions rather than a wig, complements Dustins ongoing dedication to Eddie. He continues wearing the Hellfire Club t-shirt, though it is torn after bullies confront him at Eddies grave early in the season.
Even after the attack, Dustin remains determined to honor Eddie by seeking vengeance against Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). While the t-shirt may not survive, the hairstyle endures. Hindsgaul commented, Its a poignant way for Dustin to keep Eddies presence alive. Its heartbreaking, but meaningful.
Hindsgaul, who has been part of the shows styling team since Season 1, also noted Matarazzos full commitment to the transformation. Watching Gaten adjust his walk and overall demeanor to match Eddies influence on set was fascinating. When he walked down the hallway, it all clicked, she said.
By the conclusion of Volume 1, Dustin is navigating the Upside Down alongside Steve (Joe Keery), Nancy (Natalia Dyer), and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton). Viewers are left wondering whether he will succeed in avenging Eddie and how he will respond to Wills (Noah Schnapp) newly revealed abilities as the story heads into Volume 2.
