An 18-year-old from Shropshire has established a community for women dealing with reproductive health issues, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Bethany Lewis, a trainee dental nurse from Weston Rhyn, received her PCOS diagnosis in April 2025. Shortly after, she founded The Cysters Circle, a group that organizes regular gatherings across the county to connect with more women.

PCOS is a hormonal condition that can disrupt ovulation, causing irregular and painful periods, and affects around one in ten women in the UK, according to the NHS. Ms. Lewis explained that the circle was created to benefit both herself and others facing similar struggles.

"I experience very heavy periods and persistent dull pain, often needing strong pain relief," she shared. The group also welcomes women and girls with endometriosis and other hormonal or reproductive health concerns.

After her diagnosis, Ms. Lewis relied on online resources to understand her condition. She described the experience as challenging both mentally and physically, and emphasized how isolating it can feel. "Having a supportive group makes a huge difference," she said.

The circle's first meeting had only two attendees, but the subsequent gathering in Telford attracted eleven participants. "It's a significant increase and helps in building a supportive community," Ms. Lewis noted.

Members exchange experiences, tips, and frustrations, and the group also provides informational resources from various charities. "It's reassuring to be with people who truly understand what you're going through," she added.

Ms. Lewis aims to expand the group's reach, advocating for awareness and support for women and girls not only in Shropshire but across the UK.

Analysis: The Growing Importance of Support Networks for Women with Reproductive Health Issues

The recent establishment of The Cysters Circle by 18-year-old Bethany Lewis highlights the significant gap in accessible, supportive communities for women facing reproductive health challenges such as PCOS. This initiative brings to light the critical need for safe spaces where women can share their experiences, seek advice, and find solidarity with others who truly understand their struggles. While medical resources for conditions like PCOS and endometriosis are important, emotional and peer support is equally crucial for navigating the mental and physical tolls of these conditions.

The group’s rapid growth—from two members in its first meeting to eleven in its second—illustrates a clear demand for these types of gatherings. The success of The Cysters Circle underscores how isolation can exacerbate the challenges women face when dealing with reproductive health issues. As Bethany Lewis points out, knowing you're not alone can make a world of difference, not only in providing comfort but also in fostering confidence for those seeking further medical advice or treatment.

This movement, though still in its early stages, has the potential to inspire similar initiatives across the country, especially as it broadens its focus to include women and girls dealing with a range of hormonal and reproductive concerns. It’s a crucial step toward raising awareness about conditions that often go underreported or misunderstood, and it calls for a national conversation about increasing resources and support for women's health beyond just clinical settings.
