Ontario high school student Evan Budz has created a bionic underwater device designed to resemble and move like a turtle. The 10th-grader has already received recognition, including first place at the European Union Contest for Young Scientists.

"Healthy aquatic environments are essential to humanity, and monitoring these areas has become increasingly important," Budz explained in a YouTube video.

Conventional monitoring equipment often generates strong currents and noise that can disrupt marine ecosystems and stress wildlife. Budzs design, however, imitates the natural movement of green turtles, allowing it to navigate underwater without harming the environment.

The device, which looks like a real turtle, is equipped with artificial intelligence that enables autonomous movement along pre-programmed routes, collecting data on coral health and other vital ocean metrics.

"Evans achievement highlights his project as a world-class innovation, demonstrating the capacity of young Canadians to address complex environmental and technological challenges," said Reni Barlow, executive director of Youth Science Canada.

Rising ocean temperatures, which absorb about 91% of the planet's excess heat, are a serious concern. This warming contributes to coral bleaching, glacier melting, and other environmental impacts.

Declining coral health has prompted conservation efforts, similar to a Noah's Ark-style preservation project for critical marine species. On land, trail cameras serve a comparable role, documenting rarely seen species and tracking their well-being.

Developing the turtle-like robot required extensive expertise. Budz consulted Ripleys Aquarium specialists to understand turtle movements. Advanced ballast systems, waterproof cameras, and custom servos ensure the device performs its tasks effectively underwater.

The inspiration for the project came from a camping trip, where Budz observed a sea turtle in its natural habitat. The device is now set to undergo further testing, including water sampling and additional monitoring tasks.

"I have demonstrated that my robot can assist in protecting sensitive marine ecosystems," Budz stated in the video.
