'The Abandons' actresses Gillian Anderson & Lena Headey aim to bring pride to lesbian fans.

Netflix's upcoming Western series The Abandons, created by Sons of Anarchy mastermind Kurt Sutter, has generated massive excitement among lesbian viewers with the casting of Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey as rival matriarchs. Both actresses are celebrated icons within the sapphic community, making their on-screen confrontation particularly anticipated.

The first season is now available on Netflix, set in 1854 in Washington Territory. The story explores family, loyalty, love, and the clash between social classes through two sharply contrasting households. Constance Van Ness (Anderson), a wealthy widow, wields power in Angels Ridge through her allies in local governance and aggressively acquires land and silver in her quest for control. Opposing her is Fiona Nolan (Headey), the mother figure of a chosen family of orphans and outcasts, who considers the land their divine inheritance and organizes resistance against Constances expansion.

The narrative intensifies when a tragedy involving children in both families sparks a chain of violent confrontations. This setup allows Anderson and Headey to engage in gripping face-offs, thrilling viewers and the actresses alike. Anderson described the collaboration as electrifying: I was hugely grateful for what Lena brought to all the scenes. I was incredibly impressed and in awe at how well she was able to match the stuff that Constance believably throws at her. Lena came full force, prepared and ready to have a showdown.

Headey shared similar sentiments, noting the chemistry and interplay between them: We had pages of intense scenes together. Gillian had more to learn than me, which I appreciated. We match each other in focus and mischief, so we could really play off one another.

The characters arent just formidable; they frequently blur the lines between anti-hero and villain. Anderson, known for her heroic roles, relished the opportunity to explore darker territory. I've never played a baddie before, and I was looking forward to leaning into that. It is cathartic. I enjoyed it, she said. Headey, famous for her iconic portrayal of Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones, highlighted the gender role reversal in this series: It usually would be two men, especially two men of our age. Its incredible that two women are taking on these roles. It's wild and exciting.

The excitement among lesbian audiences was palpable, and both actresses are aware of the impact of their pairing. Anderson laughed, I didn't know that, but that's pretty cool. Yeah, I'll take that. Headey added, Well take it. Well make you proud.

The Abandons is now streaming on Netflix.
