The Batman writer stands up for Paul Dano amidst harsh criticism from Quentin Tarantino

Paul Dano has been defended by The Batman Part II co-writer following Quentin Tarantino's harsh remarks about the actors performance in the 2007 Western There Will Be Blood. Dano, 41, who played preacher Eli Sunday opposite Daniel Day-Lewis ruthless oilman Daniel Plainview, was called out by Tarantino as the films major flaw.

[Dano] is just a weak, uninteresting presence, Tarantino said during a recent episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast. The weakest actor in SAG.

After Tarantinos comments, fans rallied to Danos defense online. Among his supporters was Mattson Tomlin, co-writer of the upcoming Batman sequel, where Dano is expected to return as The Riddler. Its wonderful to see so many people celebrating Paul Dano this week, Tomlin wrote on X. Hes not only a remarkable actor but also an exceptional director, demonstrating both control and deep empathy.

During the podcast, Tarantino ranked There Will Be Blood as the fifth-best film of the 21st century but claimed it could have ranked higher without what he saw as a major flaw. He continued, The flaw is Paul Dano. Its supposed to be a two-hander, but its obvious it isnt. He is weak sauce, man.

The Pulp Fiction director also mentioned he would have preferred Austin Butler for the role, adding, Im not saying his performance is terrible, just that its a non-entity. I dont care for him.

Paul Dano is celebrated for his roles in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Meeks Cutoff (2010), and The Fabelmans (2022). His portrayal of Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood is widely regarded as his breakthrough role, showcasing his talent for nuanced and compelling performances.

In 2022, Dano entered the superhero genre with Matt Reeves The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson. His portrayal of the villainous Riddler was widely praised, earning acclaim for its intensity and originality. There are plenty of comic book films where you know exactly what to expect. Reading the script for The Batman, you could tell it was a real film, Dano told The Independent in 2024. Every line thats just Matt Reeves.
