The Grinch is poised to disrupt the Late Late Toy show

The festive excitement is building as The Late Late Toy Show prepares to air, with Patrick Kielty from County Down returning as host for his third consecutive year. This time, hes taking on a mischievous role, dressing up as Dr. Seusss iconic character, The Grinch, in an attempt to "steal Christmas."

Kielty described the experience not as a stressful obligation, but as a privilege to be part of a program that "brings immense joy" to viewers.

Among the young performers is Maire from Magilligan, County Londonderry. She told BBC News NI that being selected for the show was "a dream come true." Like many children across Ireland, she will be reviewing the latest toys on air, while dozens of others showcase singing and dancing talents from across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Maire shared her excitement, explaining that after her mother submitted a video of her singing to RT, she received a life-changing phone call. She has been singing from a very young age and loves sharing that joy with others. Although she cannot reveal details of her performance, she promised it will be "out of this world" as she sings to millions of viewers.

The 16-year-old has grown up watching the Toy Show as a holiday tradition, complete with treats and laughter. She hopes her performance inspires other young viewers to pursue their own dreams in music and dance.

Uniting the Nation

Speaking on BBC Radio Ulster, Patrick Kielty emphasized that the show is a celebration that brings people together. The event features a parade of children representing all 32 counties of Ireland, creating a unifying festive spectacle.

"Every year, the kids find ways to surprise you and make you laugh," Kielty said, recalling memorable performances from past shows. The mix of talent from all four provinces is a highlight for viewers and participants alike.

This year, 13-year-old Aoibheann and 14-year-old Aislinn, students at St Catherines College in Armagh, will also perform. Aislinn has been playing the fiddle and taking singing lessons since she was seven, while Aoibheanns family shared their pride and excitement as she prepares for her on-screen debut. For many, the Toy Show marks the start of the holiday season, making the experience even more special.

Grinch Transformation

The theme of Christmas movies continues this year, with Kielty previously portraying characters from Elf and Home Alone. Transforming into The Grinch will require three hours of makeup and prosthetics, with removal taking about an hour and a half. Kielty joked about the challenge, noting the minimal natural resemblance between himself and the infamous green character.

The shows opening will also feature a special voiceover from Ballymena actor Liam Neeson, adding to the festive star power.

When to Watch

The Late Late Toy Show is traditionally Irelands most-watched television event, drawing over a million viewers and spreading Christmas cheer globally. Kielty praised its accessibility, noting it can be enjoyed by audiences around the world, creating a sense of Irish communal celebration similar to Thanksgiving.

Viewers can tune in on Friday, 5 December at 21:35 GMT on RT One and RT Player.
