The heartwarming tale of the 2025 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree

New York City is set to shine even brighter this Wednesday evening as the iconic Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is officially illuminated. This cherished tradition began in 1931 when a 20-foot balsam fir first took its place in the center of the plaza. While modern additions like live internet streaming have updated the celebration, the festive spirit remains unchanged.

This years tree comes from East Greenbush, a town near Albany in Rensselaer County. The magnificent 75-foot Norway spruce has stood in the backyard of Judy Russ and her family for around 75 years. For the 37-year-old Russ, donating the tree carries deep personal significance, as it honors her late husband, Dan, who passed away in 2020. Dan had long hoped their family tree would one day be chosen for Rockefeller Center.

Reflecting on her decision to give the tree, Russ shared, "Seeing its full size and grandeur made me realize it was more than just a backyard tree. We even talked about renting a crane to decorate itthats when I knew it was truly extraordinary."

The lighting ceremony will be hosted by country music star Reba McEntire and will air at 8 p.m. ET on NBC, with streaming available on Peacock.
