Clint Bentleys Train Dreams offers a serene cinematic experience a contemplative look at frontier life, where silence and sweeping landscapes of the Northwest mirror the quiet rhythms of a working mans existence. For actor Joel Edgerton and cinematographer Adolpho Veloso, this calmness embodies the essence of Denis Johnsons 2011 novella, capturing the dignity, fear, humor, and memories that shape a mans life journey.
It highlights the majesty of an ordinary existence, Edgerton reflects on portraying Robert Grainier, a logger navigating life in the early 20th century. Cinema often focuses on heroes who save the world, but this is a different type of story. Its about the beauty and significance of everyday living.
Edgertons connection to the material deepened over time. Initially interested in adapting Johnsons work himself, by the time Bentley offered him the role, the story resonated more personally. Ive experienced similar milestones as Robert raising a young family, facing anxieties I previously had to imagine, he says.
While the film draws on classic Western imagery forests, railways, loggers, and migrant laborers it avoids traditional genre clichs. This isnt a typical Western, Edgerton explains. Its about life itself, the passage of a persons years through love, family, hardship, and eventual renewal.
For Veloso, translating Johnsons poetic prose into cinematic visuals required careful attention. The film is structured around memory, evoking the sensation of discovering old photographs and piecing them together out of sequence. This inspired the use of a 3:2 aspect ratio, reminiscent of vintage photographs and conducive to showcasing natures grandeur.
Filming took place entirely on location around Spokane, Washington, staying true to Johnsons setting. Everything was built on site cabins, fire towers giving actors freedom to inhabit the spaces fully, Veloso notes. He also established visual patterns for different stages of Roberts life: static shots for childhood, fluid handhelds for adulthood, and stable, calm imagery for later years.
Edgertons portrayal of the mostly silent Grainier required restraint and physical authenticity. Robert doesnt express his emotions freely. My challenge was being stoic yet fully present, inhabiting a body shaped by decades of labor. The characters warmth emerges subtly through humor and intimate moments with his family, revealing joy amid hardship.
One memorable scene captured spontaneous delight: Edgerton and his on-screen daughter releasing chickens, creating a moment of playful authenticity that reflects the directors supportive approach. Fire also plays a key role, from cabin candles to forest blazes. Real flames were used whenever possible, with a major forest fire scene simulated through lighting in a burned landscape.
Bentley weaves themes of environmental change, displacement, and technological progress throughout the narrative, touching on mechanized logging and the mistreatment of migrant workers. Edgerton sees the film as a reflective mirror for audiences. Some leave contemplating grief, others feel connected to nature, and many are moved to cherish loved ones. Its a story that lets viewers explore their own place in the world.
This Q&A is presented by THR in collaboration with Netflix.
Author Commentary: Embracing the Ordinary in "Train Dreams"
Clint Bentley’s Train Dreams captures a rare quietness in cinema, translating Denis Johnson’s prose into a visual meditation on daily life in the early 20th-century Northwest. The film’s strength lies in its dedication to realism, from the fully constructed on-location sets around Spokane, Washington, to the nuanced performances of Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier.
Edgerton’s portrayal emphasizes restraint and authenticity, reflecting decades of labor and life’s quiet struggles without relying on overt dramatization. Cinematographer Adolpho Veloso’s use of a 3:2 aspect ratio and distinct visual patterns for each stage of Robert’s life reinforces the film’s memory-driven structure, evoking nostalgia and the passage of time.
While borrowing Western motifs such as forests, railways, and loggers, the film deliberately avoids genre clichés, focusing instead on the dignity and ordinariness of everyday existence. Environmental shifts, technological progress, and social issues like migrant labor subtly underpin the narrative, giving the audience space to reflect on life, family, and human resilience.
Ultimately, Train Dreams is less about grand heroics and more about the quiet significance of living fully. Its contemplative tone and careful craftsmanship allow viewers to connect emotionally with Robert’s journey, offering a cinematic mirror for personal reflection.
