Movies can hold a variety of meanings depending on our mood, the weather, or the world around us. In an era when streaming from home is easier than ever, films often become background noise during chores or cooking. Yet each year, a few exceptional films demand our full attention, and 2025 offered a remarkable lineup that captivated, challenged, and entertained.
One of Them Days
Keke Palmer and SZA star as two resourceful Los Angeles residents racing against time to gather $1,500 to pay rent. Their day spirals into chaos as they attempt to sell blood, raid charity bins for clothes, and flip a rare pair of vintage sneakers. Directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, this comedic gem is both hilarious and heartwarming, leaving audiences with a sense of optimism.
Kill the Jockey
Argentine filmmaker Luis Ortega delivers a surrealist neo-noir centered on Remo (Nahuel Prez Biscayart), a perpetually inebriated jockey forced into hiding after a dangerous accident involving a mobsters prized horse. Suffering from amnesia, he assumes the identity of a woman named Dolores, exploring identity and desire in a visually stunning, provocatively playful narrative reminiscent of Buuel and early Almodvar.
The Mastermind
Kelly Reichardts semi-comedic drama follows J.B. (Josh OConnor), an art-school dropout in 1970s Massachusetts, who attempts to steal valuable paintings mostly for his family. OConnors nuanced performance conveys both charm and vulnerability, making the film an empathetic, lightly humorous exploration of a man lost between ambition and love.
Sinners
Michael B. Jordan portrays twins Smoke and Stack, returning to the Mississippi Delta after World War I and Chicago, with plans to open a juke joint. Their celebration becomes tense when unexpected visitors arrive. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film fuses music, history, and societal tensions into a powerful and bittersweet tale of freedom, unity, and the elusive promise of happiness.
Roofman
Channing Tatum stars in Derek Cianfrances bittersweet romantic comedy about Jeffrey Manchester, a former criminal seeking redemption. With Kirsten Dunst as his new partner, he builds a new identity, love, and family. Roofman examines modern masculinity, the desire to provide, and the challenges of forging stability in a complicated world.
Peter Hujar's Day
In Ira Sachs reflective drama, Rebecca Hall portrays writer Linda Rosenkrantz interviewing photographer Peter Hujar (Ben Whishaw) about a single day in 1974 New York. Hujars witty and perceptive personality shines in this quiet celebration of artistic life, capturing the beauty and intricacies of creativity that often emerge from ordinary moments.
Sentimental Value
Joachim Trier explores love, loss, and family dynamics as sisters (Renate Reinsve and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) cope with the death of their mother and the flaws of their estranged father (Stellan Skarsgrd). The film emphasizes that while homes hold families, true support comes from the people who genuinely care for us.
Blue Moon
Richard Linklater presents Ethan Hawke as lyricist Lorenz Hart, grappling with his place alongside the success of collaborator Richard Rodgers (Andrew Scott). Set over a single night, Blue Moon is a tender, witty, and introspective look at creativity, friendship, and the bittersweet passage of time.
An Officer and a Spy
Roman Polanskis meticulous retelling of the Dreyfus Affair features Jean Dujardin as Officer Marie-Georges Picquart, who works to free wrongly accused Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus (Louis Garrel). The film is a reminder of the importance of justice, moral courage, and critical thinking in challenging times.
Nouvelle Vague
Richard Linklater also brings to life the making of Jean-Luc Godards iconic Breathless. Set in 1960 Paris, it follows Godard (Guillaume Marbeck) and American actress Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch) as they navigate guerrilla filmmaking with energy and passion. Nouvelle Vague celebrates cinemas power to inspire, transform, and endure.
