2025 was challenging for environmental policies at the federal level. Significant rollbacks were made, including the reduction of protections for wetlands and streams, expanded oil and gas drilling across 1.3 billion acres of coastal waters, a pause in clean energy infrastructure development, and the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord for the second time. While these changes caused concern, climate-related disasters were a more immediate threat to communities nationwide. The Los Angeles wildfires in January destroyed neighborhoods, including homes of many in the music scene. Central Texas faced severe flooding in July, claiming over 130 lives, and Hurricane Melissa in October killed more than 100 people in the Caribbean.

Amid these challenges, the music industry stepped up with sustainability initiatives, addressing touring, merchandise, waste management, and collaboration. Maggie Baird, an environmental advocate and Billie Eilishs mother, emphasized the importance of cooperative action, calling 2025 a period for radical collaboration to improve sustainability collectively.

Eco-Conscious Merchandise

Several artists worked to make their merchandise more sustainable. Chappell Roan revamped her signature camouflage hat from 100% polyester to a 50/50 cotton-polyester blend and explored upcycling vintage items with Beyond Retro for her concerts. Billie Eilish partnered with Suay to repurpose hundreds of dead-stock work shirts into new merchandise, including bags and embroidered items. These upcycled products sold out quickly due to their limited and unique nature.

Maggie Baird also collaborated with Bravado, a UMG merchandising division, to transform 400,000 unsold t-shirts and other items into yarn at a Moroccan facility. Transported by ship to minimize carbon emissions, the yarn is being used to produce 100% recycled cotton t-shirts for Europe. Eilishs team and Bravado are experimenting with new cutting patterns to further reduce fabric waste, setting a precedent for the industry.

Artists Amplify Sustainability Messages

In addition to well-known figures like Eilish, FINNEAS, Coldplay, Dave Matthews Band, and Jack Johnson, other artists also advocated for environmental causes. SZA highlighted the energy and water consumption of AI technologies and raised awareness about environmental injustice. Masta Killa collaborated with PETA to promote plant-based diets, noting their health and ecological benefits. Eilishs tour ensured venues offered at least one plant-based meal, along with staff training on preparation and nutritional education.

Northern Irish electronic duo Bicep released Takkuuk, an audiovisual installation exploring Arctic indigenous communities lives and challenges. The project toured globally, raising awareness about environmental and cultural issues through music and visuals.

Indie Festivals Embrace Sustainability

Independent festivals expanded eco-friendly programs. Ultra in Miami diverted nearly 97,000 pounds of waste, recycled over 31,000 pounds, and saved nearly 19,000 pounds of food and beverages. Since 2019, Ultras Mission: Home initiative has grown to 61 programs, including waste reduction and stage power conversion from diesel generators to the grid.

Nashvilles Deep Tropics festival eliminated trash bins onsite, diverting 87% of waste in 2024, and plans to expand to three days in 2026. London festivals Junction 2 and Paradise in the Park offered fully vegetarian and vegan menus, encouraged artists to avoid private jets, and implemented attendee travel offsets. Oregons Cascade Equinox Festival continued its eco-band initiative, funding tree planting and land protection in Ecuador.

Major Sustainability Projects Continue

Projects launched in previous years maintained momentum in 2025. Lollapaloozas battery-powered main stage returned, reducing fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by 67%. Sounds Right, a playlist generating royalties for conservation, raised $400,000 for Indigenous-led projects in the Amazon and Congo Basin and added 50 new tracks in 2025. r.World reported keeping 20 million single-use cups and serveware out of landfills since 2017.

Reducing Waste in Nightlife

Efforts to cut single-use plastics expanded. Electronic producer Blond:ish launched Zero Plastic Club: NYC, aiming to prevent 42 tons of waste annually in New York nightlife by replacing disposable bottles, cups, and wristbands with sustainable alternatives. The initiative also seeks 3,000 signatures to demonstrate public support.

Waste management was a key focus at the Music Sustainability Summit in Los Angeles. AEGs Crypto.com Arena employs a full-time sorting team that categorizes refuse into recycling, reuse, waste, and compost streams across 250 events annually, setting an example for large venues.

Analysis: Music Industry Sustainability Efforts Amid Policy Setbacks

From my perspective, 2025 demonstrated a clear contrast between federal environmental policy and initiatives emerging from the music industry. While national regulations saw rollbacks affecting wetlands protection, energy infrastructure, and international climate commitments, artists, festivals, and industry organizations continued to implement measurable sustainability measures within their own operations.

I observe that many of these initiatives focused on practical areas where the industry has direct influence. Merchandise production shifted toward recycled materials and upcycling programs, major tours integrated plant-based food options, and festivals implemented structured waste diversion systems. Data reported by several events and venues indicates measurable reductions in waste and fuel consumption, suggesting that operational changes can produce tangible environmental outcomes even without broader policy support.

At the same time, collaboration appears to be a key factor in scaling these efforts. Partnerships between artists, merchandising divisions, environmental organizations, and venues allowed experimentation with new manufacturing methods, waste management systems, and awareness campaigns. These coordinated actions show how industry networks can accelerate sustainability practices when participants share resources and operational knowledge.

Overall, I conclude that 2025 highlighted the growing role of the music sector as an independent actor in environmental responsibility. Despite policy uncertainty at the federal level, industry-led programs continued to expand, indicating that sustainability initiatives within entertainment can progress through collective action, operational innovation, and audience engagement.
