Pope Leo has recently voiced strong concerns regarding the treatment of immigrants in the United States. In October, he stated that supporting abortion restrictions while endorsing the death penalty or harsh immigration policies does not align with a true pro-life stance.
Following this perspective, some Catholic communities are making bold statements. Saint Susanna Parish in Dedham, Massachusetts, unveiled a nativity display that features an absent Baby Jesus and a sign reading "ICE WAS HERE."
The display references LUCE, a Massachusetts hotline for reporting suspected ICE activity. Father Stephen Josoma explained to Boston 25 that the scene was intended to reflect contemporary global realities, emphasizing that churches should foster welcoming communities.
He further elaborated to Boston.com that many immigrants have followed all legal requirements, yet their status remains vulnerable, with some facing mortal danger if returned to their countries. He described the current policies as cruel and highlighted the need for more compassionate solutions.
This is not the first time Saint Susanna Parish has attracted national attention with its nativity displays. In 2018, Father Josoma placed Baby Jesus inside a black metal cage, sparking widespread discussion.
Father Josoma stated that his goal with these provocative displays is to "hold a mirror to the world," showing society the issues that demand attention. He remarked that this year's display felt particularly urgent and immediate.
