The integration of artificial intelligence into songwriting is rapidly expanding, even in Nashville, a city long celebrated for its authentic human touch and the motto three chords and the truth. Breland, the singer and songwriter known for hits like My Truck, believes the technology has escalated beyond control and insists that audiences should be informed when music is AI-generated.
Listeners deserve to know if the voice they hear is human or not. It should be mandatory to disclose that, Breland shared during a recent episode of Rolling Stones Nashville Now podcast.
He expresses concern that AI is overshadowing human creativity while consuming significant environmental resources. AI has gone too far. If it were being used to tackle global problems, maybe that would make sense. Otherwise, its just harming the planet. Music is such a fundamentally human experience, so automating it and stripping it of humanity is troubling, Breland explained.
Rather than just criticizing AI, Breland suggests practical ways to use it responsibly. First, AI-produced songs should be clearly labeled. Second, profits from these tracks should be directed toward grants and scholarships for emerging artists, he said. If someone profits from work they didnt createif they arent a songwriter, producer, or artistthey shouldnt receive publishing rights. The earnings should benefit real people striving to make a difference in music.
During the podcast, Breland also addressed topics such as diversity in Nashville and recent controversies involving established artists performing at private events.
Listeners can watch the full episode of Nashville Now and subscribe to Rolling Stones weekly country music podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or other podcast platforms. The show features interviews with a wide range of artists, including Lainey Wilson, Hardy, Charley Crockett, Kings of Leon, Amanda Shires, Shooter Jennings, Margo Price, and many more.
