The landscape of queer-centered action films is expanding with projects like Love Lies Bleeding and Honey, Don't. Joining this wave, comedian Tig Notaro has announced her own action movie in collaboration with acclaimed director Zack Snyder.
During a recent appearance on On Air with Kara Swisher, Notaro revealed that she is developing what she described as a "hot lesbian action" film with Snyder, a project later confirmed to be in progress by industry sources.
Notaro gained wider recognition in film after her role in the 2021 movie Army of the Dead, where she replaced Chris D'Elia following his departure. Reflecting on the experience, she shared, I went viral for being sexy in this film. It was completely unexpected. My phone was blowing up. I wasnt expecting this kind of attention, so I called Zack to talk about it. People from all walks of lifestraight men, gay men, gay women, straight womenwere saying they found me hot in the movie.
The comedian explained that her collaboration with Snyder on Army of the Dead led to a creative connection, ultimately inspiring the concept for their new project. We thought, why not make everyone in the movie a hot lesbian? Zack loved the idea immediately. We're now developing the script. Imagine a poster with the title and the tagline Hot Lesbian Actionthats how I pitched it to him over Zoom, she said.
Notaro shared additional insights about the film, noting that it is tentatively titled Deviants and is set in a historical period featuring characters navigating closeted lives.
Aside from this project, Notaro discussed her role as a producer on the documentary Come See Me in the Good Light, which honors her late friend Andrea Gibson, a celebrated queer poet who passed away earlier this year after a battle with ovarian cancer.
Analysis: Tig Notaro and Zack Snyder Enter Queer Action Cinema
The collaboration between comedian Tig Notaro and director Zack Snyder marks a notable expansion of queer representation in the action genre. Their upcoming project, tentatively titled Deviants, aims to center on lesbian characters navigating historical and closeted contexts, reflecting a deliberate focus on LGBTQ+ narratives.
Notaro's experience in Army of the Dead provided the foundation for this collaboration, highlighting how prior creative partnerships can influence new, boundary-pushing projects. The comedian emphasized the project's unique positioning with a tagline focused on "hot lesbian action," signaling both an embrace of queer visibility and a challenge to traditional genre conventions.
This development is part of a broader trend in Hollywood, where films like Love Lies Bleeding and Honey, Don't have already started to explore queer-centered action storytelling. Notaro’s dual role as producer on the documentary Come See Me in the Good Light further underscores her commitment to elevating queer voices and memorializing influential figures within the community.
