On a rainy Los Angeles afternoon, the latest album by TEED transforms a routine drive into a reflective journey, blending melancholic moods with rhythm, turning even the stop-and-go traffic into a captivating soundtrack. To me, it feels romantic, TEED explains while sitting down for lunch in Hollywood, enjoying a turkey club sandwich with black tea. Clad in jeans and a brown leather jacket suited for the weather, he resembles a more wintery version of the character he portrayed in the promotional visuals for his third album, Always With Me, released Friday, December 5 via The Orchard and his label, Nice Age.
The visuals for the album depict TEED in a contemplative state, often in coastal settings, evoking the nostalgia of childhood vacations. Born Orlando Higginbottom in the U.K. but based in Los Angeles, he recalls family trips to France with a sense of adventure and transformation, saying, Id have my headphones on for two days; it was like my own heros journey. He channeled these memories into the albums 11 tracks, aiming to create a dreamy, immersive experience for listeners.
Long known as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, he now simply goes by TEEDa change he describes as natural, since many already called him that. It also reflects his growth from the success of his 2012 debut, Trouble, through the challenges of the music industry, and the long gap before his 2022 follow-up, When The Lights Go. TEED acknowledges facing difficult moments and achieving sobriety during the pandemic, now culminating in this latest body of work.
The album arrives in an era when music strategy often overshadows the art itself. Everyone is a marketing expert now. Can we just listen to the song and applaud that? TEED muses. With supportive partners like The Orchard and Jet Management, he has cultivated the space to craft the thoughtful, stylish songs on Always With Me, even if its not the club-focused record he once envisioned. His current U.S. tour continues until December 20, with Australian dates beginning in the new year.
Describing the album, TEED says its less self-involved than his previous work, aiming for something warmer, lighter, and more enjoyable. He reflects on the process as a kind of apology for his prior album, seeking to craft music that evokes feelings and memories rather than directly presenting ideas. Summer holidays and first romantic experiences form a thematic thread, shaping the records emotional palette.
The sad guy on vacation aesthetic seen in album visuals, TEED jokes, comes naturally. He notes a personal British tendency toward reserved expressions, which he combines with introspection and emotional nuance. The albums creation followed years of navigating the music industry, overcoming depression, and rediscovering his path after a challenging period post-Universal Records, culminating in a return to self-released music with supportive partners.
TEED describes his ideal creative day as starting with reviewing previous work, followed by exercise and studio time. Balancing touring with production, hes now focused on the current album while already thinking about the next one. He describes an inner contrarian voice that challenges his creative instincts, a dynamic he navigates to produce work aligned with his vision.
The artist explains that his decision to simplify his stage name to TEED reflects both maturity and practicality. The original name, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, was partly a playful shield from trends but often difficult for fans and radio hosts to pronounce. He retains humor and subversion in his artistry, even as his public persona becomes more straightforward.
Collaborations on the album, including work with SG Lewis and Tove Lo, continue his exploration of blending electronic musics physicality with emotionally resonant songwriting. TEED acknowledges the ongoing challenge of uniting danceable beats with lyrical depth, embracing the journey as part of the creative process.
