  3. Trailer for 'My Father's Shadow': Akinola Davies Jr. Tells a Personal Story of Fatherhood Amidst the 1993 Nigerian Unrest

After its debut at Cannes earlier this year, My Fathers Shadow has released its first official trailer. Set to hit theaters on February 6 through Mubi, the film marks the personal directorial debut of Akinola Davies Jr. It follows Sope Disiru portraying a Nigerian father who struggles to reconnect with his two estranged sons, Chibuike Marvellous Egbo and Godwin Egbo, over the course of a single tense day in Lagos amid the political unrest of the 1993 elections.

Co-written with his brother Wale Davies, Akinola shared that the historical backdrop allowed them to build suspense while capturing the reality of that period in Nigeria. He emphasized that the story not only highlights Nigerian history but also resonates with audiences across Africa and the global diaspora. "People often know Nigeria through its music or fashion, but theres so much more complexity and magic to discover," he explained.

Reflecting on the personal nature of the film, Akinola, who was just 20 months old when his father passed away, revealed that his brothers script deeply moved him. I had never imagined spending a day with my father, someone I am named after but never knew, he said, describing the emotional impact of bringing his own story to the screen.

My Fathers Shadow also made history as the first Nigerian film to premiere in Cannes Un Certain Regard section before opening in cinemas across Nigeria in September.

Director Akinola Davies Jr.'s Personal Journey in 'My Father's Shadow'

The upcoming release of "My Father's Shadow" is much more than just a film debut for Akinola Davies Jr.; it’s a deeply personal project shaped by family, history, and the emotional journey of reconnecting with a lost legacy. Set against the politically charged backdrop of Nigeria's 1993 elections, the film follows a father’s attempt to rebuild ties with his estranged sons during a single, pivotal day in Lagos. Through this tense narrative, Akinola brings his own experiences to life, exploring the loss of a father he never knew. This film is not just a piece of entertainment, but an emotional reckoning with his past and a reflection of Nigeria's complex history.

The historical context of the 1993 Nigerian elections serves not only to heighten the suspense of the plot but also underscores the personal and societal struggles of that time. Akinola and his brother Wale Davies, who co-wrote the screenplay, have woven a story that speaks not only to Nigerians but to a broader African and global diaspora audience. The film challenges the perception of Nigeria often defined by its music and fashion, aiming to reveal a deeper, more intricate side of the country’s history.

While "My Father's Shadow" marks an important milestone for Nigerian cinema—being the first Nigerian film to premiere at Cannes—its impact extends beyond this achievement. The film is a testament to the power of storytelling in bridging generations and cultures, making it not just a historical narrative, but a universal one. Akinola Davies Jr.'s emotional connection to the project, shaped by his own experiences of loss and discovery, brings a profound authenticity to the work, making it a must-see not only for those interested in Nigerian cinema but for anyone with a connection to the complexities of family, history, and identity.
