Update on Movie Release Date Shared by Jenny Han, Author of "The Summer I Turned Pretty"

Fans eager to return to Cousins Beach will need to wait a little longer. Jenny Han, the creator of The Summer I Turned Pretty, shared news about the upcoming movie adaptation, revealing that she recently completed the script, months after it was first announced.

I just wrote it, Han mentioned during The Wraps 2025 Power Women Summit, adding, We have not filmed anything yet. Despite this progress, the 45-year-old author, who also penned the original book trilogy, confirmed that the movie wont be released as some fans had hoped.

I know that everyone was expecting it this Christmas, Han said, but thats unfortunately not possible. She explained that post-production for the third season of the series wrapped only a month before it premiered on Amazon Prime, leaving no room to start filming the movie earlier. The show came out in July, Han noted. So we wouldnt have had time to film the movie immediately.

Regarding the storys direction, Han teased that theres a significant event ahead for the main character, Belly, played by Lola Tung. There is another big milestone for Belly, she shared during a Today appearance, hinting at whats to come, but without revealing further details. Even the cast, including Lola and Christopher Briney, admitted they arent fully informed about the movies plot yet.

Season three of the series deviates from the third book in several ways. The show depicts Belly finishing her junior year at Finch University, while in the book, the timeline differs. Important events, like Jeremiahs infidelity and subsequent proposal, are portrayed differently, and additional storylines, such as Steven and Taylors relationship complications, expand beyond the books narrative.

The series also explores Conrads mental health journey more deeply than the novels, highlighting therapy sessions and emotional struggles. Bellys study abroad experience in Paris, which was only briefly mentioned in the books, is given more screen time to emphasize her growth and independence.

Jenny Han emphasized that the movie will continue Bellys journey, offering new insights and developments not fully explored in the series. Fans can expect an expanded story that captures Bellys life and growth beyond the events of the books and show.
