'Wet Bandit' Daniel Stern Reveals Reasons for Skipping “Home Alone” Anniversary Events (Exclusive)

Daniel Stern, best known for his role alongside Joe Pesci as one of the "Wet Bandits" in Home Alone, is enjoying a quieter, more grounded lifestyle these days. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, the 68-year-old actor shared insights into his current life, which revolves around farming and art rather than Hollywood events.

Despite the enduring popularity of Home Alone, Stern confirmed he will not participate in the film's 35th anniversary celebrations. "I don't leave my farm," Stern said with a laugh. "It's no offense to the movie. I'm just ... a phone call, Zoom call, I'm in. But... I'm a bit of a homebody."

In the 1990 classic, Stern played Marv, the bumbling partner of Joe Pesci's Harry, who attempt to rob homes in the Chicago area, culminating in a comical encounter with Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, who has been left home alone during Christmas.

Stern has long stepped away from the Hollywood spotlight. He now lives on a farm in Ventura County, California, where he and his wife tend to cattle and citrus groves, while Stern also pursues sculpture as a creative outlet.

Although he is aware of Home Alone's lasting appeal, Stern prefers to enjoy its legacy from a distance. "I love knowing that everybody loves it but, like, actual people come at me and say, 'We love it.' It's a little overwhelming sometimes," he admitted.

Reflecting on the film, Stern acknowledged he recognized its potential during production. "I did know that it was a gem of a movie," he said. "John Hughes wrote the funniest script I've ever read. I mean, I was rolling on the floor, laughing reading it. It was so funny, but it was also full of heart the kid and the neighbor, the mother and son reunion ... it was very emotional."

Stern added, "It was so funny, it was so true, and I did know that. I was hopeful that we were making a great movie. I had no idea obviously no one could of the longevity of its life."

While Stern has opted to stay away from anniversary events, other cast members, including Macaulay Culkin, have appeared at fan gatherings to celebrate the 35th anniversary of this holiday favorite.
