Even stars still producing music are reconsidering how they engage with their careers. Taylor Swift has indicated she wont repeat the scale of her Eras Tour soon, citing exhaustion. Miley Cyrus has openly discussed her lack of desire to tour again, prioritizing mental health and sobriety over performance obligations.

The pattern is clear: younger millennial pop stars are experiencing burnout. The current industry climate places enormous pressure on artists while diminishing creative rewards. Many have sought stability and broader opportunities in film, television, or entrepreneurship. Rihanna, for example, has focused entirely on her beauty and fashion ventures for nearly a decade, while Grande and Gomez have developed their own successful brands.

The intense demands of remaining at the top of the pop world have drained the joy many once found in music. Previous generations of artists like Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Cher managed to balance music with other creative pursuits, sustaining long careers. Today, the pace, expectations, and stakes make sustaining the same level of energy and inspiration more challenging.

In her second newsletter, Charli XCX discussed the "realities of being a pop star," highlighting both the glamorous aspectslimousines, fashion, partiesand the isolating, mundane spaces like green rooms and long van rides. She emphasized the pressure to conform: People still believe there is only room for women to be a certain type of way, and once they claim that identity, they cannot evolve or change.
