A Norwich resident, Martha Goddard, has been formally charged in connection with several attempted explosions targeting public spaces and eateries. The 49-year-old allegedly carried out seven attacks from March to September, including two Starbucks outlets and a McDonald's restaurant.
Authorities claim Goddard also targeted the Millennium Library, part of the Forum building which houses the BBC's regional offices, as well as a transmission station responsible for broadcasting TV and radio programs.
Currently in custody, Goddard is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey in London in February. The alleged attacks occurred on the following dates: Millennium Library on 24 March, McDonald's in Haymarket on 27 March, Starbucks in Haymarket on 12 May, Millennium Library again on 21 May, Starbucks on St Stephens Street on 25 July, and Tacolneston transmission station on 28 and 29 September.
Initially appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 13 October on seven counts of criminal damage, prosecutors have now added six additional charges of attempting to cause explosions with intent to endanger life or property.
Investigators state that Goddard allegedly used improvised incendiary devices containing thermite, aiming to trigger explosions capable of causing significant property damage. She is also accused of possessing explosive materials at her residence on Sarah Williman Close with the intent to endanger life or property.
The Eastern Regional Special Operations Unit, composed of organized crime and anti-terror specialists, led the investigation.
Analysis: The Growing Threat of Domestic Terrorism
The charges against Martha Goddard, a 49-year-old resident of Norwich, mark a disturbing development in the escalation of domestic threats targeting public spaces. Goddard's alleged actions, spanning over six months, demonstrate a deliberate and calculated effort to cause harm through improvised incendiary devices aimed at public venues such as libraries, fast-food chains, and critical transmission stations. These attacks highlight a worrying trend in the use of homemade explosives and the potential for significant property damage and loss of life.
What stands out in this case is the methodical nature of Goddard's alleged campaign, with multiple public locations being targeted at different times. The inclusion of high-profile targets like the Millennium Library, which also houses BBC offices, and a key broadcasting transmission station, underlines the growing complexity of domestic terrorism threats. The fact that she allegedly had explosive materials at her residence further complicates the situation, suggesting a wider potential network or future plans.
Authorities have now upgraded the charges against Goddard, adding six additional counts related to attempts to cause explosions with the intent to endanger life. This raises crucial questions about the state of domestic terrorism preparedness in the UK and the effectiveness of intelligence-sharing among regional law enforcement units.
With Goddard’s appearance at the Old Bailey scheduled for February, it remains to be seen whether this case will reveal larger networks or individuals who may have been involved in or inspired by similar ideologies. The investigation, led by the Eastern Regional Special Operations Unit, highlights the increasing need for targeted anti-terror strategies and a closer look at how improvised explosives are being accessed and utilized by individuals across the country.
