Influencer Sydney Towle shared what seemed like uplifting news about her rare bile duct cancer, only to later reveal that her doctor had delivered incorrect results.
On December 3, Towle posted on TikTok that her blood test "showed no tumor DNA," celebrating the moment with her 865,000 followers. In the clip, she wore a mask and smiled as overlay text highlighted her excitement.
"My oncologist congratulated me for the first time today," she wrote, also mentioning her ongoing participation in a clinical trial. Towle, diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma at 23, noted that her treatment appeared to be working, despite the disease typically affecting older adults, according to medical sources.
However, later that same day, she posted a follow-up video correcting the earlier announcement. Towle explained that her initial results were actually from another patient, and her own test showed an increase in tumor markers.
"My results were positive and significantly higher than the last time they were collected. Mistakes happen, the day will still come," she wrote in the TikTok caption.
Towle detailed the mix-up in a tearful recap, explaining that her blood sample had been confused with another patients by the medical records team. She said her doctor admitted the error and apologized, acknowledging it was a situation that had never occurred before.
Despite the distress, Towle expressed understanding and did not blame her doctor, reflecting on her own moment of hope: "People make mistakes. I'm honestly the only person I am upset with right now, because I knew that that couldn't have been accurate. I wanted to believe that could possibly be my reality."
