Bruce Prichard recently discussed Jim Johnston's iconic WWE entrance themes, acknowledging Johnston's huge impact on wrestling music. However, Prichard noted that over time, the sound began to feel similar, due to Johnston being the primary composer for many years. He suggested more collaboration might have added variety to the music.
Jim Johnston is recognized as one of the most influential music composers in WWE history, having created numerous iconic entrance themes that continue to resonate with fans. His work has left a lasting impression on the industry, and many supporters advocate for his inclusion in the WWE Hall of Fame due to his contributions to the companys musical legacy.
During a recent episode of his Something To Wrestle podcast, Bruce Prichard offered a detailed perspective on Johnston's career, particularly addressing the later period of his compositions. While Prichard acknowledged Johnston's significant impact on wrestling music, he also discussed certain limitations he observed. Prichard stated, I think that Jim had a huge contribution to the business in general. Jim wrote the soundtrack to a lot of people's youth. The issueand I'm not discounting Jim or that argumentI don't know, maybe he does [belong in the Hall of Fame]. I do believe that Jim, without a doubt, had a huge contribution. The issue becomes, with only having one person to do that, after a while, it all starts to sound the same.
Prichard clarified that his comments were not intended as a personal critique of Johnston but rather as an observation about the uniformity that can result from having a single composer responsible for a large volume of music. He noted that Johnston's distinctive style sometimes led themes to resemble one another, citing Bam Bam Bigelow's entrance theme as an example.
To introduce variety into WWE's musical offerings, Prichard explained that the company occasionally worked with other composers. Notable collaborators included Rick Derringer and additional external contributors. Over time, however, Johnston increasingly controlled the music production process, aiming to maintain his artistic vision and reduce outside influence.
Prichard suggested that more collaborative involvement could have enhanced the diversity of WWEs soundtrack. He remarked that if he had been in Johnston's position, he would have welcomed additional creative support. Despite this, Prichard emphasized Johnston's capacity to handle one of the most challenging roles in professional wrestling, managing a demanding workload while creating memorable music for numerous performers.
The discussion highlights both Johnstons undeniable contributions to WWE and the practical challenges of having a single composer shape the companys musical identity over many years. His influence on the entertainment experience for fans remains widely respected, and his catalog continues to be celebrated for its cultural impact on wrestling audiences.
