Neal McDonough, known for his roles in Yellowstone and Desperate Housewives, has shared his enthusiasm for portraying Jesus in the faith-centered series The Life of Jesus Podcast on Fox Faith. He discussed the project during an interview on Fox & Friends, highlighting the shows goal of bringing biblical stories to listeners through an audio format featuring celebrity voices.
The 52-episode podcast, hosted by Ainsley Earhardt, takes audiences through the life of Jesus Christ. McDonough described the series as a valuable way for people to engage with Scripture, stating, Im not really political. I call myself a God-fearing American. Projects like this, which focus on God across 52 half-hour episodes, give people a chance to immerse themselves in the word of God.
He added that the podcast simplifies the experience of exploring the Bible: Opening the Bible can feel overwhelming. Weve made it accessible. From Christmas to Easter, listeners can enjoy exceptional segments voiced by incredible actors such as Malcolm McDowell, Julia Ormond, Sean Astin, and Brian Cox.
The star-studded lineup has drawn controversy, as some actors later revealed they were unaware their voices had been included until the public announcement. Fox Faith confirmed that the podcast features over 100 notable actors, including Kristen Bell as Mary Magdalene, Sean Astin as Matthew, Brian Cox as God, Malcolm McDowell as Caiaphas, and John Rhys-Davies as the narrator. However, Bell, Cox, and Rhys-Davies clarified their recordings came from previous projects for which Fox owned the rights.
Fox responded to concerns by explaining, Gulfstream Studios produced The Life of Jesus Podcast using content from The Truth and Life Dramatized Audio Bible, licensed by Fox News Audio, with full cooperation from all actors involved.
Despite the debate over the project, McDonough expressed optimism, emphasizing the podcasts spiritual purpose. Hearing the word of God is always meaningful. This is a tool that makes it easy to access His message, especially during the holidays, he said.
Fox Faith will release the series in four parts to coincide with major events in the Christian calendar:
- November 30: The first 13 episodes launch to mark the start of Advent.
- December 21: Another 13 episodes arrive during Christmas week.
- February 15: The third set of 13 episodes releases for Lent.
- March 29: The final 13 episodes premiere on Palm Sunday.
