A care home employee has been sentenced to prison for embezzling over 200,000 through a sophisticated scam. Elizabeth Henderson, 66, used legitimate invoices to funnel funds into her own bank account over six years. The fraud was uncovered during routine checks, leading to her conviction.
A care home employee has been sentenced to prison after unlawfully taking over £200,000 from her employer through an elaborate scheme, authorities have reported.
Details of the Fraud
Elizabeth Henderson, 66, from Westlands Road, Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, worked as a finance administrator at a care home located on Hockley Road. Over a period of six years, she misappropriated funds by manipulating supplier invoices to pay herself without authorization. The total amount stolen was reported to be £212,228.
Henderson repeatedly used genuine supplier invoices to make fraudulent payments to her own bank account. In one notable instance, she transferred £4,000 under the pretense of paying a care agency engaged by the home. The fraudulent activity took place from January 2018 until April 2024, when her actions were discovered, leading to her dismissal from the care home.
Discovery of the Crime
The fraud was uncovered when a newly appointed member of the finance team performed routine checks. During these checks, the staff member noticed an £800 payment that Henderson had recorded as “Tesco milk,” but which was actually directed to her own account. This discovery prompted a full investigation by both the care home and Staffordshire Police.
Legal Outcome
Henderson admitted to fraud by abuse of position and was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at Stafford Crown Court. Investigating officer Martin Ottey from Staffordshire Police described the fraud as “a calculated and complex web of deceit” and emphasized that Henderson was determined to fraudulently garner funds for her own personal gain. He praised the swift investigative work of the care home and the police, which allowed authorities to fully document the extent of Henderson’s offenses.
