Four individuals were arrested in Rotterdam after a fire, set with an explosive device, erupted at a local synagogue early Friday morning. The blaze caused no injuries, and authorities are investigating the suspects and monitoring other synagogues in the city.
Authorities in Rotterdam confirmed that a fire was deliberately set outside the entrance of a local synagogue early Friday morning. According to law enforcement, the blaze was initiated using an explosive device, though it extinguished without causing injuries.
Incident Overview
The fire took place around 3:40 am local time (02:40 GMT). Officials reported that the device generated flames at the entrance of the synagogue, but the fire did not spread and self-extinguished. Following the event, police immediately analyzed surveillance recordings and conducted searches in the surrounding area. Additional synagogues across Rotterdam were placed under monitoring as a precautionary step.
Detentions Linked to the Fire
Four individuals were apprehended after exhibiting erratic driving near another synagogue within the city. Authorities noted the suspicious behavior and acted promptly, resulting in the arrests. Investigators are continuing to examine the connection between the detainees and the fire at the synagogue.
Community Response
Video circulated on social media displayed flames at the synagogue entrance and a minor explosion shortly after the fire began. The synagogue’s chairman, Chris den Hoedt, highlighted that although the damage to property was minimal, the deliberate attack has increased concern among the Jewish community.
Justice Minister David van Weel stated that the incident appears to have been intentional, with motives likely tied to anti-Semitism. He referenced past threats and acts of violence targeting the Jewish community in the Netherlands.
Rotterdam Mayor Carola Schouten announced measures to enhance security. She emphasized that the city does not tolerate acts of anti-Semitism, intimidation, or violence against any religious group.
Ongoing Investigations and Security Measures
Authorities continue to investigate the origin and nature of the explosive device, as well as the role of the four detained individuals. Nearby synagogues remain under observation to prevent further incidents and ensure community safety. Officials affirmed that acts of intimidation or violence against religious groups will be strictly addressed and that the city is committed to maintaining a secure environment for all residents.
