The environmental authority in Hamburg announced the release of a young male wolf that had previously been captured following an incident involving a woman. The decision was confirmed on Monday and reflects an approach aimed at maintaining both public safety and the protection of wildlife.

The animal was released on Sunday at a location that has not been disclosed. Before being returned to the wild, it was fitted with a tracking transmitter. This device enables continuous monitoring of the wolf’s movements. Authorities stated that the system allows hunters to respond if the animal approaches populated or residential areas, reducing potential risks to people.

According to Environment Senator Katharina Fegebank, the chosen course of action complies with legal requirements while addressing safety concerns and animal welfare. The monitoring system is intended to ensure that preventive measures can be taken quickly if necessary.

The wolf was first noticed in Hamburg at the end of March. On the evening of March 30, it entered a shopping arcade located in the Altona district. During this occurrence, a woman, estimated to be around 60 years old, was reportedly bitten. After the incident, the wolf moved through the city and later jumped into the Inner Alster lake. Police officers managed to capture the animal there.

There are differing accounts regarding what exactly happened inside the arcade. Officials indicated that the wolf may have reacted out of panic when the woman attempted to direct it through automatic glass doors, which could have led to the bite. However, eyewitnesses provided another version, stating that the wolf jumped toward the woman but did not actually bite her.

The decision to release the wolf followed public demonstrations supporting its return to the wild. On Sunday, around 100 people gathered at the site where the animal had been captured. Participants expressed support for wildlife protection and emphasized the importance of non-lethal solutions.

The wolf will continue to be monitored through the installed transmitter. Authorities confirmed that intervention measures are in place if it moves close to urban zones. This approach is intended to balance human safety with the preservation of wild animals in their natural environment.

The situation highlights the complexity of managing wildlife in urban areas. It demonstrates the necessity of ensuring safety for residents while also applying measures that allow animals to remain part of the ecosystem.
