German president urges support for Ukraine during Christmas

In his official Christmas message released on Wednesday, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged the public to provide steadfast support for the Ukrainian people, who continue to endure ongoing Russian aggression. Steinmeier emphasized the importance of maintaining solidarity with Ukraine during this difficult time, which has now spanned nearly four years. He called for a deeper connection among people, urging everyone to strengthen their bonds, both old and new, as an expression of shared humanity and commitment to peace.

As we celebrate this season, let us remember the plight of those who are far from home and in harms way. Ukraine remains at the heart of our thoughts, as the people of the country face constant suffering due to the war with Russia, Steinmeier stated. He acknowledged that while many have actively supported diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict, there remains a complex mixture of hope, skepticism, and concern about the future. Despite these challenges, Steinmeier underscored the importance of a collective European response based on shared values and unity.

The German President also made a call for Europe to rediscover and reaffirm its common strength. Europeans must once again recognize the power we share as a continent, grounded in our common values of freedom, justice, and democracy. We must act with determination and a clear sense of responsibility toward those who need our support, Steinmeier said. His words underscored the importance of not letting the shadows of uncertainty cloud the pursuit of a brighter future for all Europeans, and especially for Ukraine.

Reflecting on the lessons learned throughout history, Steinmeier spoke of the significance of key values such as freedom, human dignity, justice, and democratic self-determination. He emphasized that these principles must guide Europes response to the war and continue to form the foundation of the continents commitment to peace and stability. We have learned through our experiences the undeniable importance of these values. They are not negotiable, not for ourselves, and certainly not for our friends and allies, Steinmeier affirmed.

Looking ahead, Steinmeier, whose presidential term will end in 2027, called on the German people to approach the future with courage and an openness to change. He noted that it is essential to face the challenges of tomorrow not just with bold decisions on the national stage, but also by embracing the small, everyday actions that can strengthen society. Courage is needed not only for the grand decisions but also for the small steps we take together. It is through these collective efforts that we ensure peace and cohesion in our communities, Steinmeier concluded.
