Italian authorities have successfully blocked Russian cyberattacks targeting the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, ensuring that government institutions and Olympic venues remain secure as the Games officially begin.
Italian authorities have successfully blocked a series of cyberattacks linked to Russia that were intended to disrupt the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The information was confirmed by Italy’s Foreign Minister as security agencies intensified protective measures only hours before the official opening of the Games.
The cyber incidents targeted several Italian government institutions, including offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, beginning with diplomatic facilities in Washington, D.C. Additional attempts focused on locations connected to the Olympic infrastructure, including hotels in Cortina. Italian officials reported that all attacks were neutralized and that no operational disruption occurred. Further technical details were not disclosed.
In response to elevated security risks, Italy has deployed more than 6,000 police officers and nearly 2,000 military personnel across Olympic venues stretching from Milan to the Dolomites. Specialized units, including bomb disposal teams, snipers, and counterterrorism forces, have been placed on standby. The Ministry of Defense has also provided 170 vehicles equipped with radar systems, drones, and aircraft to support monitoring and protection activities during the Games.
Attention has also focused on the presence of personnel from the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Their participation has generated political debate, particularly in Milan, where officials expressed concern over the involvement of a foreign law enforcement body. Italy’s Interior Minister clarified that the ICE representatives, specifically from the Homeland Security Investigations division, will operate exclusively within United States diplomatic missions and will not exercise law enforcement authority on Italian territory. Their responsibilities are limited to intelligence sharing and advisory support related to cybercrime and broader security risks.
The United States Embassy in Italy confirmed that HSI agents will not engage in patrols or enforcement actions and will provide assistance only in an advisory capacity. Despite these assurances, demonstrations are planned during the opening days of the Olympics, with critics citing concerns about foreign security involvement.
Several protest actions are also scheduled during the Games. Environmental groups plan demonstrations over infrastructure development and the use of artificial snow in mountain areas. Additional protests are expected during the arrival of the Olympic flame in Milan and during the opening ceremony at San Siro stadium.
As Italy prepares to host the Winter Olympics, authorities continue to implement extensive security measures to ensure safe operations. The prevention of cyberattacks and the deployment of national security resources remain central to efforts to safeguard athletes, officials, and spectators throughout the event.
