German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has confirmed that Germany will not join military efforts in the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the country prefers diplomatic solutions and avoids direct involvement in the conflict related to Iran.

Merz says Germany does not want to be part of Iran war

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Germany does not currently consider it necessary to participate in international military operations to secure commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. He emphasized that the country does not "wish to become involved" in the conflict associated with Iran.

Statements Made During Norway Visit

Speaking in Norway alongside Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on Friday, Merz addressed questions regarding the United States’ approach to resolving the war that began with Israel on February 28. He noted that inquiries about the US strategy "haven't really been answered" up to this point.

Germany’s Position on Maritime Security

When asked about Germany potentially joining a mission to protect shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, Merz responded: "As things stand, I don't see any reason to consider military protection of sea lanes." He acknowledged the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz as a global oil transit route, which has experienced blockades by Iran following US-Israeli operations earlier this year.

Focus on Diplomatic Efforts

Merz clarified Germany's stance regarding the conflict, stating that Germany is not participating in the war, does not intend to engage militarily, and is focusing on diplomatic measures to end hostilities. He indicated that discussions are ongoing with both the US and Israeli governments to promote a resolution to the conflict.

Norway’s Alignment with Germany

Prime Minister Støre confirmed that Norway also has no plans to engage militarily in the Strait of Hormuz. This position differs from suggestions by French President Emmanuel Macron, who has advocated for a potential international operation to secure the strategic waterway.

Summary of Positions

  • Germany: No military involvement; focus on diplomatic resolution.
  • Norway: No intervention planned; aligns with Germany.
  • France: President Macron supports possible military protection of shipping lanes.

Chancellor Merz reiterated that Germany’s main objective is to facilitate an end to the conflict without engaging directly in military operations in strategic maritime regions. The government continues to prioritize dialogue and negotiation over armed participation in the ongoing war involving Iran and Israel.
