Zelensky cautions Ukraine of impending Russian assaults during Christmas

Kiev, December 23, 2025

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised concerns about the potential for increased Russian military activity during the upcoming Christmas period. Speaking to a group of diplomats in Kiev on Monday, Zelensky warned that Russia may carry out intensified attacks in the coming days, a pattern he has observed repeatedly in the past. The President noted that the situation is expected to be especially dire due to Ukraines lack of advanced air defense systems.

While Ukraine officially celebrates Christmas on December 25, following Western traditions, a large portion of the population continues to observe Orthodox Christmas on January 7, similar to Russia. This dual observance of the holiday poses unique challenges, as both Western and Orthodox Christmas periods are seen as times of heightened security risks due to potential Russian operations.

In his remarks, Zelensky stated, "We expect heavy attacks from Russia during Christmas, as this has been their strategy in previous years. The risk is heightened due to our current air defense situation." The shortage of modern air defense systems in Ukraine remains a critical vulnerability, making the country more susceptible to aerial assaults and other forms of aggression.

Diplomatic Talks Update

In his evening address, Zelensky also provided an update on ongoing diplomatic talks. He revealed that his negotiation team would return to Ukraine on Tuesday after engaging in discussions with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami, Florida. Zelensky expressed hope for a detailed report on the outcomes of these discussions. US envoy Witkoff had previously characterized the negotiations as constructive after separate meetings with Ukrainian and Russian officials.

Expert Insight

Defense expert Dr. Elena Petrov offered an analysis of the current situation. She pointed out that historically, Russia has strategically timed its military operations to coincide with symbolic dates, including major religious holidays. Given Ukraines limited air defense capabilities, these periods are particularly vulnerable to large-scale military assaults. Dr. Petrov emphasized the importance of international support and intelligence sharing to help mitigate the risks of further escalation.

Key Points

  • Russia is likely to increase attacks on Ukraine during Christmas.
  • Ukraines air defense system remains a significant vulnerability in the conflict.
  • Diplomatic talks with US envoys are ongoing, focusing on strengthening Ukraines position.
  • Both Western and Orthodox Christmas holidays present overlapping security concerns.
