The holiday season has taken on a new form for the blended Willis family as patriarch Bruce Willis faces frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA). Emma Heming, Bruces wife, shared with People at the End Well 2025 conference in Los Angeles that the family is focusing on creating new memories while maintaining cherished traditions. You have to learn and adapt and make new memories [but] bring in the same traditions that you had before, she said, emphasizing that life goes on.
Heming, 47, acknowledged the challenges dementia brings but stressed that joy is still present in their lives. She added, I think its important that we dont paint such a negative picture around dementia. We are still laughing. There is still joy. It just looks different.
While Heming did not share specific Thanksgiving plans, she hinted at their Christmas celebrations. Bruce loved Christmas, and we love celebrating it with him, she said, humorously noting that they plan to watch Die Hard, referring to it as a Christmas movie.
The couples everyday life remains straightforward. Heming, who has daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with Bruce, explained that their focus is on just being able to be present with him. Her stepdaughter, Rumer Willis, echoed this sentiment in an Instagram video, expressing gratitude for still being able to hug her father. She added, Whether he recognizes [me] or not, I believe he recognizes the love. Despite the changes in Bruce, Rumer, 37, appreciates the glimpses of the father she knew and values sharing these moments with her 2-year-old daughter, Louetta.
Bruce shares children Rumer, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31, with his first wife, Demi Moore. In March 2022, the family revealed that Bruce was experiencing aphasia, which led to his retirement from acting, and later disclosed his FTD diagnosis. In August, Heming shared that she had made the difficult decision to move Bruce into a nearby residence where he could receive round-the-clock care in a safe and comfortable environment suitable for his condition.
Commentary: A New Chapter for the Willis Family
As Bruce Willis faces the harsh reality of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and primary progressive aphasia (PPA), his family's focus shifts from grief to creating meaningful moments. In an emotional interview at the End Well 2025 conference, Emma Heming, Bruce's wife, highlighted the importance of adapting to new circumstances while still honoring old traditions. Their commitment to celebrating the holidays, such as watching "Die Hard" at Christmas, underscores their determination to preserve the joy they once shared.
Despite the challenges of dementia, Emma emphasized the presence of laughter and joy in their lives. It's clear that while things have changed, the essence of their connection remains intact. This outlook is shared by Bruce’s daughter Rumer, who expresses gratitude for even the smallest of interactions with her father. Whether or not he recognizes her, Rumer believes that the love between them remains undeniable, reinforcing the notion that emotional bonds transcend cognitive changes.
In addition to navigating this new chapter, the Willis family has also made difficult decisions to ensure Bruce's well-being. In August, Emma revealed that Bruce had moved to a nearby residence for constant care, providing him with the security he needs while allowing the family to focus on their shared moments of joy. This poignant step marks both a necessary adjustment and an affirmation of their commitment to Bruce’s comfort and dignity.
