A 23-year-old man from Hastings, East Sussex, has been handed a suspended prison sentence after seriously injuring a friend during a TikTok-inspired stunt. Connor Pace, of St Helens Park Road, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
According to Sussex Police, the victim, also 23, was riding on the bonnet of Pace's car in a car park while mimicking a viral trend at a car enthusiasts' gathering in January. The victim fell off the vehicle and struck his head on the ground.
At Lewes Crown Court, Pace was sentenced to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years. Additionally, he was banned from driving for two years, ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work, and will be electronically monitored from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. for eight weeks.
The injured man remained unconscious for nearly a month due to a traumatic brain injury that required multiple surgeries and extensive medical treatment. Police noted that the incident had a severe physical and psychological impact on him, prompting his mother to relocate from Cornwall to provide care.
Investigators reported that Pace drove around Ravenside Retail Park in Bexhill-on-Sea for roughly 17 seconds before the accident occurred. Detective Constable David Symonds described the actions as "reckless and thoughtless," emphasizing that they had permanently affected both mens lives.
Judge Symonds added, "I am confident Pace did not intend to cause serious injury, but he should never have put himself or others in this situation."
