Have Astronomers Observed a Black Hole Consuming a White Dwarf for the First Time?

Astronomers have potentially witnessed a black hole devouring a white dwarf for the first time, as unusual X-ray and gamma-ray signals detected by multiple space telescopes reveal an extraordinary cosmic event that challenges current astrophysical models.

In July 2025, astronomers recorded an unexpected cosmic event during a standard survey of the sky. The Einstein Probe, a wide-field X-ray telescope developed in China, detected an anomalous X-ray source displaying rapid and intense fluctuations. Their study concluded that the event, designated EP250702a, could not be explained by existing models of cosmic occurrences. After comprehensive analysis, the researchers proposed that the event may represent the first direct observation of a black hole consuming a white dwarf star.

The Nature of White Dwarfs

White dwarfs are stellar remnants representing the final stage of stars that lack sufficient mass to form black holes. Though they are roughly Earth-sized, these stars are extremely dense, compressing a mass equivalent to the Sun into a volume no larger than our planet. This compact density makes white dwarfs susceptible to tidal forces exerted by black holes, which can lead to their destruction.

The Devouring Process

As the black hole tore apart the white dwarf, it released enormous jets of matter and energy in the form of X-rays and gamma rays, which were recorded by the observing telescopes. Jinhong Chen, a co-author of the study from Hong Kong University, noted that computational simulations indicate the combination of tidal forces from an intermediate-mass black hole and the extreme density of the white dwarf produced jet energies and timescales that closely match the observational data.

If confirmed, this event would constitute the first observational evidence of a black hole feeding on a white dwarf. The discovery has attracted considerable attention within the astrophysical community, as such an occurrence has not been previously documented.
