A new extended schedule for late-night bus and train services in Northern Ireland is set to start Friday night, with officials encouraging the public to take advantage of the routes. This initiative is a one-year pilot program introducing extra buses on Friday and Saturday evenings. Additional train services will also operate for the holiday season but will conclude the weekend before Christmas.

Metro services will depart at midnight and 02:00 GMT, while extra Ulsterbus routes leaving Belfast for towns and cities across Northern Ireland will run at various times between midnight and 01:15 GMT.

Local Reactions

Three 18-year-olds, Rebecca, Jessica, and Anna, expressed interest in using the new services. Jessica commented that buses would have been much more convenient and affordable during busy nights like Halloween. Anna noted that traveling alone might feel slightly unsafe, but going out with friends would make the service practical. Rebecca highlighted that her parents are relieved by the initiative, as they are often required to pick her up late at night. Anna added that organizing taxis has previously been challenging, particularly during university events or festive celebrations.

Service Details

All late-night Ulsterbus services will depart from Belfast Grand Central Station. Metro buses will follow 11 main routes, stopping at designated Metro bus stops. Translink has provided detailed maps and guidance for passengers.

Standard fares apply for all services, including half-price and full-price concessionary passes. Services are included in the all-day mLink ticket priced at 4. A 4 cap is applied for contactless payments, with no restriction on the number of journeys in one day. Passengers are advised to arrive early due to anticipated high demand.

Translink has urged respect for staff and announced that they will collaborate with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and its Safe Transport Team to ensure passenger safety. Staff will be available at Grand Central Station on Friday and Saturday nights to assist with ticketing and guidance.

Support from Local Economy

Funding for the pilot scheme, backed by the Northern Ireland Executive, was announced last month. The service has received positive feedback from nightlife and entertainment venues. Damien McAdams, Operations Director at the Oh Yeah Music Centre in Belfast, explained that patrons often leave events early to catch buses, making extended late-night transport highly valuable. He emphasized that the service benefits both customers and staff by providing affordable transportation home.

Ian Campbell, Director of Service Operations for Translink, expressed optimism that the public will utilize the services. Additional standby services are available if demand increases. The pilot will continue for 12 months, supporting Belfasts night-time economy and offering safe, sustainable travel options.

Full schedules and further information can be accessed on the Translink website.

Author Analysis: Late-Night Transport Pilot in Northern Ireland

From my perspective, the launch of extended late-night bus and train services represents a structured attempt to address long-standing gaps in night-time public transport across Northern Ireland. The one-year pilot focuses specifically on Friday and Saturday nights, when demand is highest, and introduces additional Metro and Ulsterbus services departing from Belfast after midnight.

The operational details indicate a coordinated rollout. Metro buses will run at midnight and 02:00 GMT on 11 core routes, while Ulsterbus services will connect Belfast with multiple towns between midnight and 01:15 GMT, all departing from Grand Central Station. Temporary additional train services are limited to the holiday period and will end before Christmas, highlighting that rail expansion is currently seasonal rather than permanent.

Standard fare structures remain unchanged, including concessionary options, mLink tickets, and a daily £4 contactless cap. This ensures cost predictability and removes financial barriers to use. Translink’s confirmation of staff presence and coordination with the Police Service of Northern Ireland indicates that passenger safety and crowd management are integral to the pilot’s design.

Based on statements from transport officials and representatives of the night-time economy, the scheme is positioned as both a mobility solution and an economic support measure. Its continuation beyond the pilot period will depend on public uptake and demand data gathered over the next 12 months.
